Responsibilities:Position Summary:

The Lead Pharmacist in the Outpatient Pharmacy Setting is responsible for leading and directing the Outpatient Specialty Pharmacy (OSP) operations to support the safe and effective management of outpatient pharmacy medication therapies. The Lead Pharmacist coordinates labor to support area service lines, including the Meds to Beds Program, Patient Immunizations and Travel Clinic, HIV/PEP/PreP clinic, and retail pharmacy services. This role is responsible for drug inventory management, tracking, and coordination to ensure compliance with the Drug Supply Chain Security Act (DSCSA), State, and Federal Laws.

The Outpatient Lead Pharmacist shall provide training and oversight for pharmacists, pharmacy technicians, interns, and administrative personnel who are engaged in retail pharmacy services and provide feedback for employee evaluations and actions. The position is required to rotate through the pharmacy on-call schedule in area of responsibility. Incumbent will make presentations to pharmacy staff and other medical professionals, within, and outside of the organization and publish in medical journals. Incumbent will lecture two times per year to other medical professionals and be published at least one time every three years in a medical journal. Also, will be assigned to precept pharmacy residents, students, technicians, and interns as required by supervisor. This position is a Direct Care Provider as defined in Pharmacy Policy. In this role, knowledge of pharmacy laws and regulations is required.

Responsible for the efficient operation of the Outpatient Specialty Pharmacy. Provides leadership to identify and implement growth opportunities in retail pharmacy. Oversee day-to-day operations and/or applications within their scope of responsibilities. Active presence in the prescription authorization, verification, and filling process. Provide direction to pharmacists, pharmacy residents, interns, and pharmacy technicians working in retail pharmacy. Oversee staff orientation, training, and competencies related to Retail Pharmacy services and organizational requirements. 15%

Provides mentorship and training to direct reports, pharmacists, pharmacist residents, pharmacy technicians, and students. Participates in succession planning. Serves as a role model for others to follow. Leads and develops pharmacists and technicians to be eligible for and attain available professional certifications and recognition of knowledge, skills and abilities. Supports the academic and research mission of the institution. Stays current with trends and developments in pharmacy practice. 10%

Ensures the availability of appropriate medication inventory. Ensures 340B optimization of drug purchasing. Addresses drug shortages and maintains compliance with DSCSA and all pharmacy laws and regulations. Evaluates drug purchase history to ensure appropriate drug and non-drug inventory availability, including over-the-counter retail items. Maintains wholesaler contract compliance. Ensures optimal reimbursement for retail pharmacy prescriptions, pharmacy services and labor expenses. Identifies and maintains quality and efficiency metrics. Creates reports, charts, and presentations/dashboards that accurately presents data. Reviews reports for medication errors, adverse drug events, and/or ineffective service. 15%

Ensures customer needs are met and addresses customer-service issues. Assists with customer concerns and ensure patients are provided with high quality, timely, and effective care. Collaborates with internal and external healthcare team members to ensure excellence in customer service. Liaise with health care providers to identify needs and opportunities. 10%

Collaborates with pharmacy and non-pharmacy healthcare teams to identify opportunities and address concerns. Maintains a high level of customer service for patients, physicians, nurses, and other healthcare providers. Actively participates in meetings and committees, as appropriate. Provides feedback to the Pharmacy Supervisor regarding employee evaluations. Supports and deploys department and hospital goals and initiatives. 10%

Actively leads and provides retail pharmacy-related patient care, including filling and receiving prescriptions, giving patient consultation and provider education, prescription order verification, drug procurement and inventory oversight. Adheres to all pharmacy laws and regulations, including URAC and ACHC standards and CA Board of Pharmacy regulations. Creates the work schedule to ensure proper coverage for all pharmacy areas. Appropriately addresses sick calls and triages staff based on work volume. Works with Pharmacy Leadership to design, plan, and implement pharmacy workflows and related programs. Provides guidance for the operational aspects of the program and oversight of the operational decision-making aspects of the program. Assists in the development of new programs and services. Develops and/or maintains policies and procedures. Develops and monitors program metrics, quality improvement, data analysis, and outcomes. 40%

Qualifications:Required Qualifications:

Must demonstrate customer service and teamwork skills appropriate to the job

Minimum four years of experience as a licensed pharmacist in a retail or community pharmacy setting, or two years’ experience & completion of a PGY-1 Residency

Knowledge and experience with the 340B drug pricing program

Graduation from an accredited School of Pharmacy with a Doctor of Pharmacy degree

Excellent planning, organization and time management skills

Demonstrated experience providing oversight, training, and development for pharmacists and pharmacy technicians

Demonstrated experience monitoring quality and efficiency utilizing metrics

Demonstrated experience developing efficient workflows, programs, policies and standard operating procedures

Demonstrate clear, concise verbal and written communication skills

Current BLS or ACLS certification

CA Board of Pharmacy Registered Pharmacist licensure in good standing

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships across the Health System

Preferred Qualifications:

Knowledge and use of EPIC WAM retail software

Knowledge and experience with URAC and/or ACHC requirements

Experience in a retail Specialty Pharmacy and/or experience with a “Meds to Beds” discharge prescription program

An advanced administrative degree (M.S., M.H.A., M.P.H., M.B.A.)
