Histology Technician I

to be responsible for producing histologic preparations to be used for diagnostic purposes in support of clinical research.This is the first of a two-level series of Histology Technicians. This level is distinguished by developing proficiency in conducting tasks and assignments as directed. Contributes to team objectives and outcomes as guided with moderate supervision that allows some latitude for independent judgment. Limited problem-solving responsibility while working under defined guidelines.This position will be in support of the DoD/USU Brain Tissue Repository (BTR) and Neuropathology Research Program at the Home Office in Bethesda, MD.The Henry M. Jackson Foundation for the Advancement of Military Medicine (HJF) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to advancing military medicine. We serve military, medical, academic, and government clients by administering, managing, and supporting preeminent scientific programs that benefit members of the armed forces and civilians alike. Since its founding in 1983, HJF has served as a vital link between the military medical community and its federal and private partners.Responsibilities

Prepares routine diagnostic histologic preparations using standard procedures in accordance with guidelines established in a research protocol.Logs specimens and performs a variety of routine histological procedures including serologic, immunohistochemical, and immunoelectrophoresis.Sorts and identifies specimens; cuts, stains, and mounts specimens on slides; labels finished slides.Makes decisions regarding adjustment of staining procedures for certain tissues and special requested stains.Prepares solutions and maintains laboratory equipment.Assists in gathering and recording data for research protocols.Ensures proper accessioning, labeling, and data entry of all specimens; processes paperwork associated with accessioning and reporting.May perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned or directed by the supervisor. This may include attendance of and participation in required training for the role.Qualifications

Education and ExperienceBachelor's DegreeMinimum of 0-2 years' experience requiredLicenses and CertificationsRegistered by the ASCP is a plus.Required Knowledge, Skills, and AbilitiesCompetency in microtomy, embedding, and staining of formalin-fixed paraffin embedded tissues.Maintains effective communication including verbal and written skills, and articulates concerns and updates in a professional manner.Completes all assigned tasks in a timely manner.Works proficiently in a fluctuating work environment, including maintaining productivity during laboratory downtime.Embraces new duties when needed, following appropriate instruction and supervision.Performs basic computer skills, including Microsoft Outlook and Microsoft Office.Understands and articulates basic medical terminology and laboratory functions.Ability to obtain and maintain a T1/Public Trust background check.Physical CapabilitiesAbility to work at a workbench or sit at a computer for prolonged periods.Work EnvironmentThis position will take place primarily in a laboratory setting.Some positions or sites may require that the incumbent be fully vaccinated against COVID-19.
