Position Details:
Summary of Duties:
Manage lab operations for the WSU Honey Bee Program, based in Pullman. The Honey Bee Program lab manager will work closely with the Apiary manager, faculty, students, and hourly workers to ensure smooth operations and experimental success. The lab manager will assist and/or lead in data collection, sample processing, data management, and space use. They will also assist in inventory control, purchasing supplies and equipment, shipment and receiving of materials/samples, and oversight of scheduling and assigning tasks to hourly workers in the molecular lab. The successful candidate will be organized, have knowledge and experience maintaining rigor in scientific experimental protocol, and communicate clearly and effectively to support a high-quality research program. They will provide training and guidance for graduate and undergrads working on various projects that involve the use of equipment and materials in the molecular labs
Required Qualifications:
• A Bachelor's degree in an appropriate related scientific discipline and four (4) years of progressively responsible professional experience which has included at least two (2) years of supervisory experience.
• Thorough understanding of the scientific method, and experience writing and following scientific procedures and protocols.
• Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing and to effectively interact with people in a positive manner.
• Experience in data analysis, statistics, and reporting results in formats suitable for scientific publication.
• Ability to perform DNA and RNA extraction from various tissues including, but not limited to honey bees, varroa mites and fungal material.
• Expertise in use of PCR and qPCR for analysis of bees, pests, and diseases
• Ability to organize and manage multiple projects simultaneously
• Must have, or be able to obtain by time of hire, a valid driver's license and meet requirements in accordance with https://policies.wsu.edu/prf/index/manuals/safety-policies-procedures-manual/sppm-7-10/ and departmental driving standards.
• Basic computer skills required, including proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel), internet searching, email communications, and Zoom virtual meetings
Preferred Qualifications:
• Master's degree in a biological or adjacent field
• Experience overseeing research throughout all stages, from experimental design through publication of findings.
• Published peer-reviewed articles, scientific reports, and scientific communication
• Experience managing a research lab
• Grant writing experience
