JOB SUMMARY:

The Assistant Controller ensures that the financial activity of the University is recorded timely and accurately, enforcing University policies and procedures, and providing guidance and recommendations regarding financial processes and related systems. Interacts with all other financial division departments as well as individual departments across the University in order to produce monthly financial data. Position is primary interface with banks and external agencies requesting financial information. Works extensively with external auditors to complete annual financial audit and other audits. The position provides guidance and support to staff and members of the finance division.

Duties/Responsibilities:• Maintains knowledge base of financial accounting policies, regulations, and procedures.• Ensures all transactions are recorded timely and accurately into University general ledger.• Supervises staff to ensure deadlines and goals are achieved.• Responsible for the monthly closing of the general ledger.• Reviews, forecasts, and funds cash position on a daily basis and makes recommendations to senior management regarding balances and sufficiency of funds.• Prepares reconciliations and reviews those prepared by staff.• Prepares analysis, reviews current practices to best practices, as directed by Controller.• Responsible for ensuring local and State tax compliance.• Reviews, approves and processes journals to reflect transactions of the University.• Responsible for the production of workpapers used in the year-end audit process.• Performs other duties as assigned

Required Skills/Abilities:

In-depth knowledge of accounting practices and procedures, and fund accounting.• Must be an advanced user of Microsoft Excel.• Must have the ability to work independently and/or as a team member.• Must have a strong customer service orientation, the ability to use good judgment, and exercise discretion.• Must have the ability to work well under pressure, must have excellent professional demeanor, self-motivated, and flexible.

Preferred Skills, Experience and Education:• Bachelor's degree in accounting, Business or related field and a minimum of ten years of progressive accounting experience.
