Specimen Processing Supervisor

Under the direction of the Laboratory Manager, the Specimen Processing Supervisor is responsible for the day-to-day operations of the Specimen Processing department including staffing, scheduling, motivating, coaching, mentoring, and performance management of team members. In this leadership position the Specimen Processing Supervisor supports the operational objectives of the facility and, along with other laboratory management, shares the responsibility of ensuring that the Specimen Processing department operates effectively. This position will perform a variety of production duties including record keeping, data entry, preparation of specimens and other ancillary tasks in support of testing.DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:Performs all assigned duties in compliance with internal SOPs and external regulations.Responsible for the work quantity and quality of the Specimen Processing department.Assigns and organizes work priorities by effectively directing workflow and managing available resources.Supervises staff; including, but not limited to, organizing and prioritizing work, completing performance reviews, training/developing, and managing work performance.Participates in the interviewing and hiring process for Specimen Processing department positions.Communicates goals so employees understand them and their role in achieving them.Motivates employees to do their best work through coaching and maintains morale by encouraging employee engagement.Prepares and conducts employee disciplinary counseling in accordance with company policy.Collaborates with the phlebotomy department supervisor to ensure appropriate staffing coverage and to develop effective interdepartmental processes.Performs all essential responsibilities of the Specimen Processing Lead position as needed.Performs ancillary and production work on the bench, regularly and as needed, to support the workload. Examples of this type of work includes but is not limited to:

Occasionally performs lab tests.May occasionally collect blood samples.Performs reconciliation of orders entered, specimens collected and processed and records data into laboratory information system and electronic medical record.Prepares reports for pending tests, send outs, and to be processed specimens.Maintains and decontaminates equipment, instruments, and work area.Maintains sample storage and determines sample stability for testing.Maintains department supply inventory and tracks expiration dates on supplies.Follows up with reference laboratory, as needed, regarding pending orders, test results, missing information, etc.

Performs other duties as assigned.Education:

Associates degree in healthcare related field. Current Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) certification through an accredited institution and/or agency (ex. ASCP, AMT).

Experience:

Minimum three (3) years of clinical laboratory experience

Preferred additional experience:

Minimum two (2) years supervisory experience.

Performance Requirements:

Knowledge:

Knowledge of applicable regulatory laboratory requirementsKnowledge of principles of supervision and managementKnowledge of phlebotomy techniques.Knowledge of specimen types and processing.Knowledge of medical terminology.Knowledge of HIPAASkills:

Equipment Operated:

Centrifuges, LIS, barcode scanner. Venipuncture equipment including needles, syringes, tubes, bandages, and other appropriate supplies.

Work Environment:

Performs duties in laboratory specimen processing area. Exposure to communicable diseases, sharp instruments, bodily fluids, cleaning chemicals.

Physical Requirements:

Must possess the physical and mental abilities to perform the tasks normally associated with working in a clinical laboratory, such as standing four to eight hours per day, walking, bending, and reaching. Occasionally lifting up-to 30 lbs. of supplies and equipment. Some stress when dealing with priorities and anxious patients.About Diabetes & Glandular Disease Clinic, P.A.:
