Responsibilities
The Interim Associate Laboratory Director, Neutron Sciences Directorate, will be responsible for the following: Serve as executive member of the Laboratory Leadership team, sharing responsibility for the simultaneous excellence in science and technology, operational excellence, and community engagement at ORNL. Advance scientific excellence and impact of the facilities, including through: shepherding and implementing the neutron strategic plan; developing mechanisms to enable users to address critical research challenges and realize major scientific breakthroughs; and developing cutting-edge instrumentation and tools to ensure that SNS and HFIR remain responsive to changing scientific needs of the community and maintain competitive positions within the world-wide ecosystem of neutron and light sources. Provide strategic and operational leadership to the directorate. Ensure continuity of day-to-day management and decision-making. Support organizational priorities, including mission delivery, risk management, and operational excellence. Collaborate with laboratory leadership, stakeholders, and federal sponsors to maintain effective communication and coordination. Promote and uphold a strong safety culture, ensuring compliance with all applicable environmental, safety, and health requirements. Mentor and support staff development and performance during the transition period.
Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree with 12-15+ years of experience. PhD., Nuclear Engineering desired. Experience supporting DOE, DOD, or other federal agencies. Proven work experience as a Laboratory Director or similar role in a research setting. Experience with quality assurance and health and safety guidelines. Exceptional leadership and management skills. Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities. Excellent communication and teamwork skills. Special Requirements: Pre-employment Drug Screen - External applicants selected for this position are required to successfully complete a post-offer, pre-employment drug test. Medical Exam(s) - Job related pre-placement medical examinations may be required for this position. This position may require the ability to obtain and maintain a clearance from the Department of Energy. If determined as such, this position would be identified as a Workplace Substance Abuse (WSAP) testing designated position. WSAP positions require participation in an ongoing random drug testing program in addition to the pre-employment drug screen.
