Head Swimming Coach Position Purpose:
Conduct the swimming program with a standard of quality and success, demonstrated by (1) consistent performance in the top 20% of its district, qualification for regional championship meets, and ranking among the top 10 in TAPPS statewide; (2) maintenance of exemplary student-athlete academic success rates (95% passing rate, 75% retention rate, and average GPA of 3.0 or better); and (3) positive personal development of student-athletes whose behavior and speaking skills reflect the competencies expected of a college prep-educated public figure. Directly Supervises:
Assistant coaches and volunteer assistants Primary Responsibilities: Design and implement a training program that enhances individual and team performance skills to support the achievement of the program’s goals Advance each student-athlete’s knowledge of sport nutrition, biomechanics, exercise science, and sport psychology to improve sport performance Collaborate with the Assistant Athletic Director to design a competitive schedule that maximizes athlete development and performance Organize and conduct summer swim camps to build rapport and provide skills instruction for incoming and prospective high school and middle school students Build and maintain strong relationships with high school and middle school swim coaches to foster idea sharing and program outreach Support and uphold the philosophy of Catholic Education and the mission of the school Adhere to the highest standards of professional conduct, including compliance with athletic department and school policies, procedures, and TAPPS rules and regulations Demonstrate expert teaching competencies in (a) swimming technique instruction, (b) motivation, and (c) coaching skills during competitive events Maintain positive relationships with officials, high school coaches, parents, the media, alumni, donors, and the public Provide strong leadership in the personal development of student-athletes by promoting high standards of behavior and public speaking skills among team members Support the academic and personal development of student-athletes through the school’s academic and personal development programs Manage a cost-effective and administratively efficient swimming program Exhibit strong writing, speaking, and listening abilities Train and supervise assistant coaches to develop head coach capabilities and support program objectives Adhere to department policy regarding the coaches' code of ethics Complete additional duties as assigned by the athletic director Contribute to positive working relationships with all staff, student-athletes, and external constituents through (a) a constructive approach to all tasks, (b) respect for the competencies of others, and (c) appropriate conflict resolution behavior Requirements Minimum Qualifications: Education and Certification Requirements: Required: Bachelor’s degree in physical education or a related area Coaching certification from a recognized sport governing body Preferred: Highest-level international sport federation coaching certification Experience and Competency Requirements: Required: Five years of coaching experience Demonstrated ability to develop competitive athletes Proven academic success of previously coached student-athletes Exemplary ethical conduct and adherence to TAPPS rules and regulations First Aid/CPR Certification Commercial driver’s license (CDL) with school bus and air brake endorsement Preferred: Playing or coaching experience at the amateur national championship level Ten years of coaching experience at a high competitive level Leadership of a State Championship program with demonstrated sport success, academic achievement, and exemplary student-athlete behavior This is not necessarily an exhaustive list of all responsibilities, skills, duties, or working conditions associated with the job.
