Minimum Qualifications

Master's in Student Development, Student Personnel, Higher Education, Counseling or related field.2 or more years of experience in a college career office, counseling center, student services office, or equivalent experience.A demonstrated understanding of career development issues for college students and alumni, and an ability to provide counseling on these issues in individual and group settings.Willingness and ability to work some irregular, flexible hours including evening and weekend hours.Preferred Qualifications

Coaching Certification or TrainingCertification and/or training in career assessment tools specifically the Strong Interest Inventory, MBTI, and Focus.Demonstrated examples of implementing innovative programming and/or scaling career services to meet student demand.Marketing experience and/or the ability to develop and implement effective strategies for promoting and increasing student involvement in office programs and services.Excellent verbal, written and presentation skills for one-on-one and group interaction with various constituencies including students, faculty, parents, administrators and employers.Analytical skills required to effectively assess program goals and student learning goals.Track record of building relationships with a variety of constituencies: faculty, administrators, students, alumni, employers, parents, and colleagues.Strong technical proficiency and experience with career-related software, word processing, database and desktop publishing applications.Commitment to working in a team setting and leadership experience working across departments and/or units to accomplish common goals.Strong organization, research, planning and problem-solving skills.Essential Duties and Responsibilities

The Career Development Center empowers and educates students and alumni through providing comprehensive career development services as they explore majors and careers, obtain internships, apply to graduate and professional schools, and secure employment.

The Career Coach for Major and Career Exploration serves as the primary professional staff member for admitted students, first year and transfer students. This role is responsible for career and professional development exploration, guidance, counseling, coaching, assessment, and programming. The position works closely with First Year Seminar, Admission, Orientation and Advising, Student Support Services and ACCESS programs, the Student Learning Center, and Transfer Services to ensure that incoming and new students have the career support necessary to make informed decisions about selecting a major and exploring corresponding career paths. This role is the primary staff member for administering and interpreting career assessments.

Specific duties are listed below:

Provide career exploration, counseling, coaching, and outreach to students and alumni in both individual and group settings including teaching the Major and Career Exploration course and/or the College to Career course.Facilitate students establishing goals and next steps in career decision making such as exploring introductory courses and career exploration websites, researching internships and jobs and speaking with faculty or employees in fields of interests.Assess students' needs and utilize a variety of individual and group techniques including values card sorts, guided imagery and worksheets to help students identify interests, skills and values. Serve as the primary Career Development Center staff member to administer and interpret assessments including FOCUS, the Strong Interest Inventory, and MBTI to encourage student exploration of interest and personality fit in the work environment.Develop a general knowledge and understanding of the programs of study offered at Appalachian, and maintain familiarity with the education, training and career opportunities and expectations of those assigned degree programs. Provide representation in various university committees and university-wide events to enhance awareness and visibility of the Career Development Center. Maintain relationship and consistent presence with First Year Seminar and College Success Seminar Coordinators, create ongoing programming to incorporate into FYS and CSS classes.Create and incorporate class assignments and programming that help students develop and engage in Career Development Center programming early in their academic journey and to build knowledge and skills around NACE Competencies.Maintain consistent communication with Counseling and Psychological Services, Student Support Services and Early Intervention Team, University College, Transfer Services and Departmental advisors to ensure seamless transition and referral when deciding or changing majors.Coordinate and conduct presentations during First Year Student, early college and transfer orientation as well as regular outreach efforts including workshops and presentations to classes, student clubs, and organizations.Provide a consistent presence in advising, including Advisor Development training and conducting assessments with general advisor caseloads.Learn, use and promote Handshake, the online career management system, among students, faculty, staff, and alumni.Serve as liaison to SSS/ACCESS programs and the Student Learning Center students through programming and outreach efforts and by offering career exploration and NACE Competency programming to classes.Communicate career resources to target student populations via Handshake and email newsletters.Maintain ongoing professional development via involvement with relevant professional associations such as the North Carolina Career Development Association (NCCDA), Southeastern Association of Colleges & Employers (SoACE) and the North Carolina Association of Colleges & Employers (NCACE).Disseminate employment and internship opportunities to appropriate faculty, organizations, and students.Maintain excellent records of student appointments and programming in order to analyze data for continuous improvement.Work with the Employer Relations team to plan, coordinate and implement employer development activities including employer visitations, on-campus employer engagement opportunities, advisory boards and on-campus recruiting, and the development of job and internship leads.Supervise student interns and employees as needed.Type of Position
