Redwood Credit Union is looking for a Senior Vice President of Mortgage Lending who will be responsible for strategically planning, directing, and evaluating all real estate lending activities for Redwood Credit Union (“RCU”). This includes first and second lien residential mortgages, and construction. Emphasis is placed on providing excellent Member experiences, significantly growing the business, executing strategies to minimize losses, including integrating credit risk principles and data throughout the portfolio, and recruiting, developing, and retaining superior team members.
Essential Functions
Executive Leadership
Review and identify cost-effective utilization of all resources. Lead and direct the management of human capital to ensure the availability of skills and abilities needed to meet RCU’s Vision, Mission, Values, and Service doctrine.
Serve as a member of the Senior Leadership Team (“SLT”), Asset Liability Committee (“ALCO”), and Business Loan Committee, providing leadership and direction for RCU.
Communicate with senior management regarding all aspects of mortgage lending, procedures, policies, and strategies. Provide regular feedback to EVP/CLO.
Recognize problems, issues, and opportunities; evaluate and consider alternatives; develop, present, and recommend strategic and tactical opportunities; and make appropriate decisions.
Attend and actively participate in Board meetings, SLT meetings, Leadership meetings, strategic and operational planning sessions, etc.
Serve on and/or direct a number of committees to strive for consensus to ensure effective interface and communication of policies, programs, and goals among lending services, other departments, and branches.
Manage the overall development of mortgage lending through business-development programs, motivate staff to sell and market RCU, and take an active role in business development.
On behalf of RCU, “own” the relationships with key assigned partners and vendors such as Fannie Mae, LOS vendors, and CU Realty. Provide leadership and participation in industry trade groups, advisory boards, etc.
Participate in and represent RCU at internal and external events, conferences, and community functions.
Program Management
Recruit, select, train, motivate, discipline, coach, mentor, recognize and evaluate reporting staff.
Lead and direct RCU’s mortgage lending activities: origination, processing, underwriting, closing, servicing, and collections.
Lead, direct and build RCU’s external real estate lending sales channel.
Develop and implement mortgage loan pricing (via ALCO) and portfolio management strategies that will meet or exceed return on asset targets while providing solid growth in loans.
Evaluate mortgage lending products, policies, procedures, practices, documents, and forms to assure efficiency, compliance, and Member service.
Identify potential for losses by monitoring loan portfolios and taking/recommending remedial action.
Provide exceptional service to all external and internal Members and clients.
Continually assess the competitiveness of all programs and practices against the relevant comparable companies, industries, and markets; balance the needs of RCU and the needs of Members.
Controlling
Review and approve or decline all loans with lending limits.
Delegate appropriate lending authorities to lending personnel, e.g., lending limits and annual review of Lending Policy with the Board.
Review monthly loan activity and reports to maintain high credit-quality standards and ensure problem loans are satisfactorily resolved.
After defining and assigning key tasks, establish measurement criteria for tracking results, assign priorities and resources, and perform regular follow-through. Ensure these processes and routine are documented and built for sustainability.
Establish and monitor reporting systems designed to keep the SLT and Board of Directors informed of all relevant activities and issues, including timely preparation of monthly status reports.
Evaluate all mortgage lending efforts to develop business to assure efficiency.
Monitor and review the department budgets.
Communicate and meet with internal and external auditors and QC staff when appropriate to ensure all feedback is documented and findings addressed in a timely manner.
Planning
As a member of SLT, formulate plans and policies affecting the overall performance of RCU.
Lead and develop the annual business and budgeting process for Mortgage to ensure appropriate integration with the long-term goals and objectives of the Redwood Group.
Collaborate with Marketing to develop mortgage lending-related promotional programs.
Other Functions
Perform other duties as assigned.
Volunteer time and capital in community non-profit groups.
Provide general training and support to non-lending RCU staff.
Establish and maintain relationships with key contacts in the community including volunteer centers and non-profit organizations.
Participate in community events, community volunteer boards and associations.
Minimum Qualifications- Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Ability to manage and develop multiple diverse sales and marketing units with the inherent conflicts from demands and priorities.
Thorough knowledge of all aspects of financial institution lending methods, practices, and services.
Knowledge of mortgage lending best practices.
Current knowledge of all laws, rules and regulations pertaining to mortgage lending.
Knowledge of credit and interest rate economics.
Knowledge of asset, liabilities, and credit dynamics in a lending environment.
Strong negotiation, persuasion, and public speaking skills.
Skill in the operation of a personal computer and word processing, spreadsheet and presentation software and Intra/Internet access.
Strong analytical skills.
Ability to analyze problems and opportunities, identify and evaluate alternatives, and develop sound, effective approaches.
Ability to plan, implement, and evaluate the achievement of strategic and business plan goals, objectives, and work plans.
Ability to lead, motivate, and supervise team members.
Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with a diverse group of people including Board Members, regulators, team members, attorneys, vendors, partners, and other parties.
Ability to travel 20% of time.
Physical Requirements
Ability to stand, bend, stoop, sit, walk, twist, and turn.
Ability to lift up to 15 pounds.
Ability to use a computer keyboard and calculator.
Work environment is indoors, majority of the time is spent sitting at a desk.
The ideal candidate has a combination of education and experience equivalent to a bachelor's degree in business administration, finance, or a closely related field, with a minimum of fifteen years’ experience in mortgage and/or commercial lending in a financial institution, and at least four years of that experience at a senior management level.
Compensation
Base starting range: $242,902 to $320,063 annually, commensurate with experience.
Our base salary starting range is based on scope and responsibilities of the position, candidate's work experience, education/training, key skills, and internal peer equity.
