Position Summary

The Cheese Lead who will be responsible for helping customers with cheese selections and pairings, sales generation within the department, maintaining food safety and quality control, and merchandising of specialty cheese products. They are also responsible for stocking and receiving cheese (cutting, wrapping, pricing cheese, and general care). Additionally, the Cheese Lead is responsible for maintaining an organized back stock area, tending to and maintaining the product in our aging rooms and keeping the cheese section organized. The Cheese Lead should stay informed on all current cheese information including regions, different milk types, ages, styles, terminology, current trends, and help to disseminate this information to customers and other staff members.

Primary Responsibilities

Maintain our aging cases and inventory.

Maintain an organized and properly rotated cheese section and storage spaces.

Ensure that all products are properly priced.

Ensure that all cheeses have accurate signage - with the name of the cheese, the milk type, rennet type, and a brief description of the product. Maintain organized storage of signage.

Remain current on all cheese-related information by attending tastings, taking notes, and asking questions.

Maintain professional vendor relationships.

Assist with other departments and at other Basics locations as needed.

Additional Position-Specific Responsibilities

Guide the work of department clerks, including daily planning, ensuring quality standards, training and coaching staff and overseeing their productivity.

Report any training issues and ensure staff are up to date on current training needs and requirements.

Monitor all work, ensure adherence to all policies and procedures and provide training to staff.

Complete customer special orders thoroughly and provide follow-through as needed.

Handle damaged and spoiled product according to company policy.

Maintain the organization, rotation and cleanliness of customer facing and back stock areas.

Customer Service Responsibilities

Engage the customer in a friendly manner, share product information and assist in locating product throughout the store. Seek opportunities to exceed customer expectations and enhance the customer experience.

Adapt service based on customer needs, handle difficult customer situations and seek solutions to delight the customer.

Facilities, Sanitation, Work Safety and Food Safety Responsibilities

Adhere to work and food safety policies set forth by the company and regulatory agencies.

Perform janitorial tasks in compliance with sanitation standards established by store policy and state and local health departments. Contribute to store cleanliness.

Maintain equipment, inform store/department management of any problems.

Report all safety concerns and work-related injuries to management.

Frequent handwashing is required.

Education and Qualification Requirements

Valid Food Handlers Certification or must acquire within 30 days of hire.

At least one year of experience working in a cheese department.

Previous ordering/inventory management experience preferred.

Strong knowledge of local, domestic and imported cheeses strongly preferred.

Duties performed are in grocery store environment, which includes surfaces that can be wet and slippery and temperature extremes in controlled environments in the cooler, and also outdoor exposure. The noise level is usually moderate. This role may be exposed to dust, mold, gluten, fragrances and other fumes and airborne particles, fresh fruits, vegetables, house plants, and flowers; also requires use of - and working in proximity to - common commercial cleaning agents. This position may be required to use knives, box cutters, slicer, scale, temp gun, cart, hand truck, dishwasher, pallet jack, computer, and office equipment. This position may also be working on or around moving machinery or moving parts.

The duties of this role are at a heavy work level. While performing this job, the employee is continuously required to be on their feet with a mix of standing and walking throughout the shift. Sitting is seldom required. The employee is continuously required to lift up to 10 pounds, use arms, hands and wrists, grasp/squeeze; frequently required to lift 11-50 pounds, carry 10-20 pounds, push/pull up to 30 pounds, bend/stoop, twist, reach at/above shoulder, reach below shoulder; and occasionally required to carry 21-50 pounds, push/pull 31-80 pounds and crouch/squat. May also require frequent climbing of stairs and ladders, depending on the store location.
