Scientist, Protein Biochemistry

At GSK, we have bold ambitions for patients, aiming to positively impact the health of 2.5 billion people by the end of the decade. R&D is committed to discovering and delivering transformational vaccines and medicines to prevent and change the course of disease.

We’re looking for a passionate and highly motivated protein biochemist to join the CoE.

As a crucial member of our team, you will be at the center of our protein expression and purification operations and you’ll find that everything we do, every day, is in line with an unwavering commitment to quality. You will be responsible for construct design and purification from bacterial, insect, and mammalian cells. With your deep knowledge of the discipline, you will be recognized as a technical expert and a scientific contributor who routinely partners with and mentors junior colleagues within the department and across therapeutic areas. The position will require active collaboration with diverse teams to work together and address key challenges.

This role will initially be located at the GSK’s Rockville site in Maryland from 2024 to 2025, and will permanently move to Cambridge, Massachusetts afterwards.

Key Responsibilities:

Maintain insect and mammalian cell cultures, perform cell transfections for recombinant protein expression.

Contribute to the design of new constructs and mutants based on structural analysis.

Work closely with the protein production and biophysics teams to select the best constructs and conditions for structural and animal studies.

Carry out protein purification tasks as required by the project to generate structural reagents.

Perform biochemical and biophysical experiments to characterize the purified proteins.

Document your work and ensure appropriate quality control experiments are carried out to support intellectual property and reagent reuse by other groups.

Present results and progress updates at team meetings.

Basic Qualifications:

PhD degree in life sciences with 0+ years of experience in a related biotechnology field or Masters degree with at least 2 years of experience in a related biotechnology field.

Minimum of one year of hands-on experience on protein expression and purification in the research lab or biological manufacturing facility.

Minimum of one year of experience purifying protein from mammalian cell culture including HEK293 and/or CHO cell lines.

Minimum of one year of experience in the operation and maintenance of AKTA systems.

Minimum of one year of experience performing common lab techniques including liquid chromatography (SEC, ion-exchange, affinity columns), SDS-PAGE, western blot.

Preferred Qualifications:

Experience in molecular biology techniques, cloning, PCR, Gel electrophoresis.

Experience with the purification of proteins from additional protein expression systems including bacterial, insect and/or yeast.

Familiarity with buffer exchange, TFF, and related process techniques.

Ability to further characterize purified material using biophysical techniques including HPLC, nanoDSF, BLI, SPR and/or mass photometry.

Excellent problem-solving skills and the ability to troubleshoot technical issues.

Demonstrated ability to work independently and as part of a diverse team.

Demonstrated ability to manage competing priorities and stakeholders.

Strong communication skills.
