GENERAL DESCRIPTION:

We are seeking a highly skilled Laboratory Chemist to join the Wyoming Public Health Laboratory. This role focuses on utilizing cutting-edge QTOF technology for biosurveillance testing, with a particular emphasis on the precise detection and analysis of opioids and related compounds. The Laboratory Chemist will be responsible for optimizing testing protocols, performing routine maintenance on QTOF instruments, and collaborating with cross-functional teams to interpret and communicate results effectively. The ideal candidate holds a Bachelor's or Master's degree in Chemistry or a related field, possesses proven experience in biosurveillance testing using QTOF technology, and brings expertise in opioid detection methodologies. Strong analytical skills, attention to detail, and effective communication are essential for success in this role.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Perform laboratory testing of biological samples, predominantly blood, and urine, to detect and quantify opioids following established protocols.Utilize state-of-the-art analytical instrumentation and techniques for sample analysis.Coordinate with hospitals and coroners to submit and process relevant biological samples for opioid testing and novel psychoactive substances.Collaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure the accurate and timely delivery of testing results.Maintain laboratory equipment to ensure precision and accuracy in testing.Document and record experimental procedures, results, and observations in a detailed manner.Stay abreast of advancements in opioid testing methodologies and contribute to the continuous improvement of testing protocols.Adhere to strict quality control measures to ensure the reliability of testing outcomes.Follow safety protocols and maintain a clean and organized laboratory environment.

PREFERENCES:

Experience with Waters G2-XS instrumentation.Experience with STARLIMS.Familiarity with regulatory requirements for biosurveillance testing including clinical and toxicology testing.Bachelor's Degree (typically in Science).0-3 years of progressive work experience (typically in a medical or environmental laboratory) with acquired knowledge at the level of a Laboratory Scientist I.

KNOWLEDGE:

Skill in oral and written communication.Ability to learn new technologies as the agency seeks to improve testing capabilities.Knowledge of basic chemistry principles and theories, gas or liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry, and immunoassays.Knowledge of laboratory quality control assurance practices, safety, and hazardous material control.Skill in data processing and analysis.Experience with laboratory information management systems (LIMS).

PHYSICAL WORKING CONDITIONS:

Typically, the employee will sit comfortably to perform the work; however, there may be some walking, standing, bending, and carrying light items.
