Senior Scientist II/Principal Scientist I Biotransformation, PK Sciences

Novartis, Cambridge, Massachusetts, us, 02140

SummaryThis position is located in Cambridge, MA. The Pharmacokinetic Sciences (PKS) Department within the Novartis Biomedical Research Division (BR) in Cambridge, Massachusetts is looking for a laboratory-based biotransformation scientist with experience in metabolite identification and profiling to join their global biotransformation team with groups in Europe and North America.

As a biotransformation scientist, you will develop state-of-the-art analytical methodologies using ultra/high performance liquid chromatography (U/HPLC) coupled with high resolution mass spectrometry (HRMS) to identify metabolites and elucidate biotransformation pathways from complex biologic matrices. This role will require you to be familiar with various in vitro enzymatic systems used in drug metabolism biotransformation studies as well as extraction procedures such as protein precipitation, liquid/liquid extraction (LLE), and solid phase extraction (SPE). In addition, you will be familiar with mass spectrometry fragmentation interpretation, structural elucidation, and data processing requirements needed to characterize metabolites of small molecules. Experience with the biotransformation of peptides, oligonucleotides, and/or intact proteins would be considered highly advantageous.

About the RoleAs the successful candidate you will plan and execute fit-for-purpose experiments, maintain the laboratory environment/instruments, and support the development of new technologies. You will also be expected to interact with and present your findings in team meetings, document your findings in an electronic notebook, and prepare internal reports. Furthermore, depending on the seniority of the successful candidate, you will represent the ADME line function in PKS sub-teams and project teams, collaborate in the preparation of external publications, and contribute to registration documents.

Key Responsibilities:

Design and execution of biotransformation studies to assess metabolic pathways and structural elucidation of metabolites

Organize and prepare experimental protocols and study reports with upload of results to a centralized database

Presentation of key findings to team members and/or other stakeholders

Support

in vitro

and

in vivo

discovery, pre-clinical, and clinical development biotransformation studies

Assure quality standard guidelines and safe work practices are applied while working in the laboratories

Essential Requirements:

Degree in Analytical/Medicinal Chemistry, Biochemistry, Biology, or Pharmaceutical Sciences, with knowledge of drug discovery/development

PhD with 0 years, MS with 3+ years, or BS with 8+ years of relevant experience

Applicants with additional research/industrial experience relevant to drug metabolism or mass spectrometry may be considered at the Principal Scientist I level

Hands-on experience in operation, maintenance, and troubleshooting of state-of-the-art high resolution mass spectrometers

Excellent oral and written communication skills

Careful attention to detail, exceptional organizational skills, and ability to multitask

Team player with ability to be flexible and adapt to a changing environment

Desirable Requirements:

Prior experience with small molecule metabolite identification, structural elucidation, and biotransformation studies

Familiarity with in vitro systems commonly used for drug metabolism studies (hepatocytes, homogenate, microsomes, S9 fraction, recombinant enzymes)

Experience with intact protein, immunoprecipitation, peptide, and/or oligonucleotide analysis would be considered a bonus

This is a dual level posting. The final level and title of the offer role would be determined by the hiring team based on the skills, experience & capabilities required to perform the role at the level the role has been offered.
