Together, we’re the next BIG thing in data.ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIESThe job opening is for a full-time R&D engineer to conduct research and advanced development for Heat Assisted Magnetic Recording (HAMR) in the heads area.Responsibilities include: Optical characterization for HAMR heads (waveguides, lasers, near-field transducers, thin film test samples), innovative development of new optical tests and lab set-ups, optical design of test structures, and detailed data analysis.Close collaboration with the wafer process teams and back-end teams to drive innovation in design, process, and materials.REQUIREDPh.D degree in Physics, Applied Physics, Electrical Engineering, Optics or closely related field. Industrial experience is highly desired but not required.Demonstrated expertise in one or more of the following areas: Optical characterization or design of optical devices such as waveguides, lasers, and plasmonic devices; Optical and thermal modeling of optical devices.Demonstrated ability to lead a project in research and/or advanced development is desirable.SKILLSStrong communication skills and the ability to work independently and in a team environment are essential.Western Digital is committed to providing equal opportunities to all applicants and employees and will not discriminate against any applicant or employee based on legally protected characteristics.
