Job Overview:

A1FED is seeking a highly skilled Subject Matter Expert (SME) - Technical Writer to lead the creation and management of technical documentation for the agency's IT systems, processes, and policies. The SME Technical Writer will work closely with IT leadership, system architects, and development teams to document complex technical solutions, ensuring compliance with federal standards and enhancing knowledge transfer across the agency's IT landscape. This role requires a deep understanding of IT systems and an ability to translate highly technical information into clear, accessible content.Key Responsibilities:Lead the development of comprehensive documentation for the agency's IT systems, including cloud platforms (AWS, Microsoft Azure), databases (Oracle, SQL Server, DB2), virtualization (VMware), and identity management systems (Active Directory, CA Identity Manager).Create detailed technical manuals, system configurations, standard operating procedures (SOPs), and user guides for critical infrastructure components.Document IT policies, processes, and procedures, ensuring compliance with federal standards such as NIST, FISMA, CUI, and OMB guidelines.Collaborate with subject matter experts in areas such as network architecture, cybersecurity, and system development to accurately capture technical specifications and operational workflows.Ensure all documentation aligns with the agency's IT modernization efforts, including cloud migration, data governance, and change management.Utilize change control tools such as Serena Dimensions and ENDEVOR to manage versioning and updates to technical documents, ensuring they remain up-to-date with system changes.Develop visually engaging content, incorporating diagrams, flowcharts, and other visual aids to improve the clarity and understanding of complex technical concepts.Train agency staff on how to use and maintain technical documentation, including best practices for accessing knowledge repositories.Act as a subject matter expert on technical writing best practices, providing mentorship and guidance to junior technical writers.Contribute to the development of knowledge management systems and repositories that streamline document storage, access, and retrieval.Required Qualifications:Bachelor’s degree in Technical Writing, Information Technology, Communications, or a related field (or 10+ years of relevant experience).8+ years of experience as a technical writer, with a focus on IT systems and infrastructure in a federal or large enterprise environment.In-depth knowledge of IT architecture, cloud platforms (AWS, Microsoft Azure), and federal compliance standards (e.g., NIST, FISMA).Proven experience documenting technical processes, systems, and policies for complex IT environments.Expertise with documentation tools such as MadCap Flare, Adobe FrameMaker, Microsoft Word, and Visio.Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to write for both technical and non-technical audiences.Strong organizational skills with a keen attention to detail.Preferred Qualifications:Experience working with federal agencies.Certification in technical writing or related fields (e.g., Certified Professional Technical Communicator (CPTC)).Familiarity with change management tools like Serena Dimensions and ENDEVOR.A1FED is an equal opportunity employer and encourages applications from diverse backgrounds.
