The Planning GIS Specialist I/II is directly responsible for performing technical duties related to maintaining and updating the GIS systems within the Planning & Development Services department. This role will primarily work with Planners to support planning projects, development activities, and other planning related services that require technical capabilities with GIS software utilization for data management, mapping, analysis, and reporting.

Work is performed primarily in a standard office environment with extensive public contact and frequent interruptions.

Duties

Performs computer-aided mapping and design. Organizes and categorizes GIS information; creates data layers.Responds to inquiries from property owners, Planning & Development Services personnel, the general public, and/or other interested parties regarding mapping and property boundary issues.Updates and maintains GIS system standards and procedures within the department.Compiles and indexes departmental records.Maintain, and apply working knowledge of industry-specific terminology and symbiology within the planning & development services GIS areas.Performs all other duties as assigned.Minimum Qualifications

GIS Specialist I ($16.79 - $20.99hr DOQ)Required

High School Diploma or GED

One year of experience working with geographic information systems or a technically related equivalent field.

Preferred:

Bachelor's Degree from an accredited college or institution in Geographic Information Systems, Geography, Landscape Architecture, Civil Engineering, Computer Science, Planning, or a related field.

Current GISP certification

Prior municipal government experience in a Planning, Engineering or a GIS related role.GIS Specialist II (21.26 - $26.57hr DOQ)

Required:

Associates Degree from an accredited college or institution in Geographic Information Systems, Computer Science, or a related field.Two years of experience working in a paraprofessional Geographic Information Systems or a technically related role.OR

An equivalent combination of education, experience, certification and/or licenses sufficient to successfully perform the essential functions of the job.Preferred:

Bachelor's Degree from an accredited college or institution in Geographic Information Systems, Geography, Landscape Architecture, Civil Engineering, Computer Science, Planning, or a related field.

Current GISP certification

Prior municipal government experience in a Planning, Engineering or a GIS related role.GIS Coordinator ($25.89 - $32.36hr DOQ)

Required:

Bachelor's Degree from an accredited college or institution in Geographic Information Systems, Computer Science, or a related field.Arc Desktop Certification of associate or higher.OR

An equivalent combination of education, experience, certification and/or licenses sufficient to successfully perform the essential functions of the job.Preferred:

Prior municipal government experience in a Planning, Engineering or a GIS related role.Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Knowledge of:ArcGIS Pro or related GIS programs.

Digitizing and data editing procedures for GIS data.

Geography, cartographic design and geographic methods.

Ability to perceive color such as working with computer displays and multi-colored data layers and features.
