The position exists to support all activities related to the operation of the Allentown Pilot Plant. The Pilot Plant Operator role utilizes process knowledge and operations experience to safely and proficiently operate processes within a pilot plant for process development scale-up activities and production of new products in a multi-purpose facility. This pilot plant supports several businesses within Evonik. Projects change on a weekly basis. Many of the products are on critical timelines for customer trials and customer sales. New projects may go through a safety review process requiring procedure development and possibly equipment modifications. The role includes performing instructions per test plans, maintaining batch sheets, logging data, and correcting, maintaining, participating in safety reviews, and building process equipment as needed.
RESPONSIBILITIESConducts the operation of the pilot plant to support process development and scale-up of new products and productivity programs. Follows operating procedures and ensures safe, and efficient operation of the pilot plant facility.Operate and perform checks on process equipment. Monitor and record process conditions. Overall operation includes 10-12 process vessels, distillation, filtration, solids processing, analytical equipment, and operation of a fork truck.Documents the knowledge gained from the development work including observations in a notebook or batch sheet.Actively participates in the EH&S of the pilot plant operation including: applying site safety policies to daily job, participating in drafting of procedures and job safety analysis as well as participating in process hazard reviews, helping maintain storage of raw materials and disposal of hazardous waste, and writing permits within the job scope for support and maintenance activities.Suggest and make equipment modifications to meet new process requirements in support of active projectsSupport the Pilot Plant operations by ordering equipment, raw materials and supplies and performing analytical on raw materials and productsREQUIREMENTS
Associate Degree in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering or related technical area and a minimum of 4 years of experience including working in a chemical process laboratory, chemical plant or pilot plant operation; or a minimum of 8 years of experience/training in a related area preferredStrong verbal and written communications skillsAbility to effectively contribute to multi-disciplinary project teams using experience and training to plan and accomplish project goalsGood understanding of analytical tools and methodologies. Individual will have the ability to independently run the equipment, troubleshoot, and maintain tools in the Pilot PlantA safety mindset with team-oriented behavior. Experience working with process safety management systems and PHA methodology. Individual will participate on a regular basis to the safety reviews of new projects entering the Pilot PlantStrong mechanical skills and ability to work with various trades. Individual will be able to creatively troubleshoot problems that arise in operations on own or working with contractorsGood understanding of equipment maintenance requirementsAbility to lift up to 50 pounds of process equipment, lab equipment or pails
