UPMC Health Plan is seeking an Agile Release Train Engineer (RTE) to help us continue our Business Agility transformation and goals. He/She will lead an Agile Release Train (ART)’s team of teams through the preparation, facilitation and delivery of our Program Increments (PIs). Reporting to the Director of Business Agility, the RTE is a critical role within the Health Plan’s agile ways of working, anchored in relentless improvement, agility, design-thinking, and customer-centricity.

The RTE will partner with Product Management, Architects, and ART leaders to leverage Scaled Agile Framework (SAFe) processes, tools and mechanisms in support of a successful roll-out of Business Agility best practices, events and ceremonies for a single Agile Release Train. The candidate brings a positive attitude, sense of urgency and a proven track-record of team building and lean product delivery. By leveraging excellent communications skills, they work effectively with cross-functional team members and other roles. As a servant leader, RTEs use experience, facts and soft-skills rather than authority to achieve goals. They put our customers first and are passionate about delivering value.

Responsibilities:

Plan and lead ART ceremonies and events, such as Program Increment (PI) Planning, Programs Boards, System Demos, etc.

Consistently track and monitor product teams progress after PI planning and provide guidance/support.

Work closely with Product Managers, Product Owners, Solution Owners, Tech Leads, DevOps, Enterprise & System Architects, and the Value Stream to support the ART in delivering on the PI Objectives and help ensure strategy and execution alignment. Facilitate Lean Portfolio Management events and feasibility workshops.

Foresee and call out risks/issues on schedule, dependencies, resource capacity, and scope from product teams. Work with product managers to understand and help communicate business priority clearly to engineering teams.

Coordinate team dependencies within the same release train and external dependencies from other trains and teams. Assist with decision-making by facilitating feature and capability estimation by teams and the roll-up to epics, where necessary.

Foster Communities of Practice and the use of engineering and Built-In Quality practices. Foster continuous improvement, along with acting as a binding agent that connects a team of teams.

Drive relentless improvement via Inspect & Adapt workshops, assess the agility level of the ART and Solution Train and help them improve velocity and accountability. Coach leaders, teams, and Scrum Masters in Lean-Agile practices and mindsets.

Champion the use of KPIs and other objective measures across teams. Keep an objective perspective on issues and troubleshoots by applying agile principles.

Bachelor's degree or high school diploma/GED with 12+ years of relevant experience 5+ years of experience working directly with Agile teams on projects as a Scrum Master.

Experience as a Release Train Engineer preferred. 9+ years of experience in a professional environment.

SAFe certified.

RTE certification at time of hire or required within 6 months of start date.

CSM, CSP or PMI Agile Certification is a plus.

Theoretical and practical knowledge of IT technologies and practices.

Expertise in Lean Portfolio Management.

Can showcase examples of implementing agile techniques in different cultures and environments.

Experience running agile projects of varying size and complexity. Strong servant leader, educator, and coach.

An excellent communicator and motivator.

Ability to manage enterprise-wide programs and interact effectively with senior leadership.

Strong facilitation, strategic thinking, problem solving skills, and leadership.

Able to achieve big picture objectives while paying attention to details.

Outstanding written and verbal communications skills.

Experience managing projects and programs across geographical regions.

Ability to function in a team-oriented environment and influence staff, colleagues, and superiors.
