Job Summary
The Staff Research Associate (SRA) position exists to join the Bondy-Denomy lab and contribute to two ongoing projects in a supportive role. Bondy-Denomy lab's primary interest is in understanding the mechanisms that underly interactions between bacteriophages and their hosts. We apply bioinformatics, genetics, and biochemistry to discover and characterize the molecules that dictate the success or failure of phage infection. SRA will work closely with a post-doc and graduate student mentors to fill a supportive role in two independent projects. Therefore applicant must be highly organized and collaborative. SRA will be working on the following two projects:
Project 1:Theories immune systems defends bacteria from its viruses, bacteriophages, through synthesis of signaling molecules that activate the effectors. We want to understand what phage components activate the system and how Theories inhibits phage replication. For this we will use bacterial genetics and biochemistry approaches.
Project 2: Prolonged growth of Pseudomonas aeruginosa at 42 C inactivates a Type I restriction modification, immune system. We have demonstrated the incredible heritability of this inactivation for up to 60 cell doublings. We have found that lon proteases are responsible for the degradation of the immune proteins at 42 C but have yet to describe the memory factor that propagates inactivation. The final salary and offer components are subject to additional approvals based on UC policy.Your placement within the salary range is dependent on a number of factors including your work experience and internal equity within this position classification at UCSF.
