The Graduate Center, CUNY is the focal point for advanced teaching and research at The City University of New York (CUNY), the nation's largest urban public university. The Graduate Center’s commitment to research and scholarship for the public good is exemplified by its more than 30 centers, institutes, and initiatives, including its Advanced Science Research Center (ASRC), a 200,000 square-foot facility in upper Manhattan, designed to promote collaboration among scientists in five areas of global research and innovation: nanoscience, photonics, structural biology, neuroscience, and environmental sciences.

The Graduate Center (GC) benefits from highly ambitious and diverse students and alumni—who in turn teach hundreds of thousands of undergraduates every year. Through its public programs, the Graduate Center enhances New York City’s intellectual and cultural life.

The Graduate Center (GC) defines the standard of contemporary graduate education: rigorous academic training and globally significant research. The GC is recognized for outstanding scholarship across the humanities, sciences, and social sciences, and is integral to the intellectual and cultural vitality of New York City. Through its extensive public programs, The Graduate Center hosts a wide range of events - lectures, conferences, book discussions, art exhibits, concerts, and dance and theater that enrich and inform.

Reporting to the Provost and Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs, the Dean for the Sciences will oversee the implementation of recent recommendations to ensure the long-term success of the doctoral and master’s programs in the natural sciences, including revamping recruitment and admissions, increasing stipend levels, curriculum reviews, and strengthening teaching and training in the sciences. They develop long- and short-range plans, and exercise management responsibility for academic program planning, faculty matters, and administration, including staffing, budgets, and facilities. They foster a high-quality environment of academic teaching, research, and intellectual achievement, and create and strengthen partnerships within and outside the College as a strong advocate.

The Dean for the Sciences will also be responsible for overseeing the science doctoral programs and the joint doctoral degree programs in the bench sciences and associated 5-year student fellowship packages and the health science programs and will handle other administrative and fiscal matters related to the sciences. In addition, the Dean will work with faculty and program heads in promoting research and programs that advance academic excellence in the sciences and will play a leadership role in the science discipline cluster.

QUALIFICATIONS

This position is in CUNY's Executive Compensation Plan. All executive positions require a minimum of a Bachelor's degree and eight years' related experience. Additional qualifications are defined below by the College.

A preferred candidate should have:

Doctoral degree and a substantial record of research and scholarly achievement qualifying for appointment to the faculty.

Broad understanding of and enthusiasm for the highest standards of academic achievement both within disciplines and in innovative combinations of them.

Strong problem-solving skills with a proven track record of working collaboratively across disciplines with multiple constituencies in a complex environment.

Exceptional interpersonal and diplomatic skills; high level of emotional intelligence with unquestionable ethics and integrity.

Demonstrated ability to help manage human and financial resources, including extramural awards.

Effective advocate for the academic excellence of students, faculty, alumni, and programs to internal and external entities.

Significant and successful academic administrative experience and proven leadership ability, including creation and evaluation of interdisciplinary programs, research programs, and structures.

Demonstrable talent for dealing creatively, flexibly, and fairly with people and issues.

COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS

$170,000 – $195,000. Salary commensurate with education and experience.
