Position Description:

Alcon is seeking an intern to support in the technical activities associated with the discipline of biomaterials engineering to support various projects within IOL (IntraOcular Lens) R&D. This individual will interact with various departments such as design, process, analysis, and manufacturing to drive innovation.

Primary Responsibilities:

Generating data to support gate decisions, product launch and/or registration.

Participate in sub-teams to identify/develop new materials and/or associated lab-scale manufacturing processes (including formulating, molding, curing, purifying, surface treating/coating etc.) for new IOL, OVD (Ophthalmic Viscosurgical Device) and Delivery system designs/concepts. Key activities include design-of-experiments, executing experiments, and collecting and analyzing data with robust application of bio-statistical methods.

Participate in efforts to identify and develop surface treatments/characterizations for materials, innovative IOL prototypes or instrumentation contacting IOLs.

Participate in sub-teams to demonstrate performance of novel IOL, OVD and/or delivery system concepts.

Ensure that all necessary training to perform the duties of the position including, but not limited to, Quality System Manual Procedures, Unit Standard Operating Procedures, Safety Procedures, Corporate Procedures for Record Retention, Program Planning, and individual specific training needs are satisfactorily completed.

Minimum Qualifications:

Must be enrolled in an accredited university or college for at least one semester prior to internship or co-op, and at least one additional semester following internship or co-op.

Must have a graduation date of December 2025 & beyond

Must be pursuing at least a Master or PhD degree in Polymer Sciences, Polymer Synthesis, Chemistry and/or Chemical Engineering only.

Academic performance: Minimum cumulative GPA 2.8/4.0.

Demonstrated leadership skills (i.e. extracurricular activities or projects).

Must be authorized to work in the US on a permanent basis without requiring sponsorship (students on an F1 visa with CPT can be accommodated).

Ability to commit to a 10-12 week, full time (40 hours per week) summer internship.

Preferred Qualifications:

Previous experiences with polymeric materials are desirable.

Hands-on with analytical equipment (material properties characterization, experience with this equipment: GC or HPLC, GPC, FTIR). Chromatography. Chemical Analysis Techniques.

Experience with data processing/analysis, including with the use of software such as Matlab, JMP, or related.
