Posting Context Statement

The dairy center helps to meet the teaching, research and outreach needs of the university as they relate to dairy cattle. Classes give students hands-on experience in cattle breeding, feeding and nutrition, handling, vaccinations, calving, milk marketing and other areas.

The dairy houses 100 milking cows and an equal number of young stock. Lactating cows are housed in locally produced compost-bedded free stalls. The herd is milked two times a day in a double six parabone-style parlor with a WestfaliaSurge metatron milking system.

Position Overview

The Assistant Manager is responsible for assisting the Dairy Manager with all operations at the Palouse Research, Extension, and Education Center (PREEC) Dairy Center. The Assistant Manager ensures current SOP protocols are updated and adhered to for all dairy operation tasks toward appropriate animal care. The Assistant Manager also works with the Dairy Manager in assessing the dairy operations budgets and expenditures, ensuring expenditures are appropriate and accurate. Along with the Feed Manager, Animal Units Operations Manager of the PREEC, and the Director of the Idaho Agricultural Experiment Station (IAES), the Assistant Manager is responsible for maintaining a year end-balanced budget for the Dairy Center. The Assistant Manager will occasionally be asked to provide management relief at the UI Beef and Sheep Unit and assist with other PREEC activities.
