Job Summary
The Senior Accountant will play a key role in managing both corporate and project accounting functions for a construction company. This role is responsible for overseeing general ledger activities, managing financial reporting, and ensuring that project costs are tracked and reported accurately. The Senior Accountant will also provide leadership in developing financial strategies, maintaining internal controls, and ensuring compliance with industry regulations. The ideal candidate has extensive experience in both corporate and project accounting within the construction industry.
Key Responsibilities
Corporate Accounting
Financial Reporting : Prepare and analyze monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements, including income statements, balance sheets, and cash flow statements for the entire company.
General Ledger Management : Oversee general ledger activities, including journal entries, account reconciliations, and month-end close processes.
Budgeting & Forecasting : Assist with corporate budgeting and forecasting activities, including the preparation of annual financial plans and monitoring actual performance against projections.
Cash Flow Management : Monitor and manage cash flow to ensure the company’s financial stability. Provide regular cash flow forecasts and analysis to senior management.
Compliance : Ensure adherence to local, state, and federal tax laws and regulations. Oversee the preparation and filing of tax returns, sales tax, W-9s, and 1099s.
Internal Controls : Develop and implement internal control procedures to safeguard company assets and ensure the accuracy of financial reporting.
Audit Support : Serve as a liaison for external and internal audits, preparing documentation, and responding to audit requests.
Project Accounting
Project Budgeting & Cost Tracking : Work closely with project managers to develop and monitor project budgets. Ensure accurate allocation of costs to projects, including labor, materials, subcontractors, and overhead.
Job Costing : Oversee job cost accounting, ensuring all project expenses are recorded accurately and assigned to the correct project codes. Provide detailed job cost reports to project managers and senior leadership.
Progress Billing & Revenue Recognition : Manage progress billing, including preparing invoices based on project milestones and contracts. Ensure accurate revenue recognition based on the percentage of completion method or other appropriate methods.
Change Orders & Contract Management : Track and manage financial aspects of change orders and contract modifications, ensuring proper documentation and communication with stakeholders.
Subcontractor & Vendor Payments : Review and approve subcontractor invoices, ensure proper lien waivers, and maintain accurate records of vendor payments.
Project Financial Reporting : Prepare financial reports for individual construction projects, analyzing project profitability, variances, and performance. Communicate with project teams on financial results and potential risks.
Leadership & Collaboration
Team Leadership : Provide guidance and support to junior accounting staff, including reviewing their work, assisting with problem-solving, and providing mentorship.
Cross-Functional Collaboration : Work closely with project management, procurement, and operations teams to ensure the financial health of projects and the company.
Process Improvement : Identify opportunities to streamline accounting processes, improve efficiency, and enhance the accuracy of financial reporting.
Risk Management : Identify and mitigate financial risks associated with construction projects and corporate operations. Provide recommendations to senior management on financial strategies and improvements.
Qualifications & Skills
Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field required. CPA or CMA preferred.
5-7+ years of accounting experience, with a strong focus on both corporate and project accounting in the construction industry.
In-depth knowledge of GAAP and construction-specific accounting practices, including job costing and revenue recognition methods (e.g., percentage of completion).
Proficiency in accounting software such as Sage, Viewpoint, QuickBooks, or similar construction management systems.
Advanced knowledge of Microsoft Excel, including pivot tables, VLOOKUP, and data analysis tools.
Strong analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making abilities.
Ability to manage multiple tasks and prioritize in a fast-paced environment.
Exceptional attention to detail, with the ability to identify discrepancies and proactively address issues.
Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams.
Experience with construction project management software (e.g., Procore) is a plus.
Working Conditions
Primarily office-based, with occasional visits to job sites as needed.
Full-time position, Monday through Friday, with potential for extended hours during peak project periods.
