Higgs Fletcher & Mack LLP, one of San Diego’s oldest and most prestigious downtown law firms, seeks an experienced
HR Director.
The HR Director is directly responsible for the leadership and overall administration, coordination and assessment of the Human Resources function. In addition, the HR Director is a member of the Executive Management Team.
Job Responsibilities:
Develop and implement annual HR strategies, tactics and resources necessary to achieve goals.
Develop and manage the annual HR budget.
Evaluate effectiveness of HR plans and procedures according to business objectives and apply improvements.
Lead and supervise HR Department staff to include: HR Generalist, Receptionist and Floater Secretary.
Lead the analysis, implementation and administration of all employee benefits.
Identify and contract with brokers and vendors to provide quality benefit plan designs and options at market competitive rates. Supervise and direct all contractual relationships to meet attorney and staff needs.
Direct all activities for annual Benefits Open Enrollment and ensure all system and employee changes are accurate and timely.
Coordinate 401(k) planning and educational meetings.
Manage all leaves of absence Firmwide, including FMLA, CFRA, PFL and personal leaves.
Identify and manage all wellness initiatives.
Internally and externally benchmark compensation data to ensure competitive and equitable compensation.
In conjunction with Accounting, ensure compliance with federal and state regulations as pertains to overtime and employment laws.
Update annually the HFM Policies and Procedures Manual, make available to all employees and ensure proper compliance followed.
Ensure Firm compliance with employment related laws and regulations.
Proactively manage the workforce to meet staffing needs and to avoid EEOC claims, wage and hour violations, and other forms of employee liability.
Assist management with employee relations through annual performance reviews, counseling, performance improvement plans and terminations (as necessary).
Oversee HRMS operations and system functionality maintaining accurate and confidential employee data and providing timely information as needed by management and vendors.
Responsible for full-cycle recruitment for all support staff and attorneys and onboarding of all new employees.
Draft all Employment Offer Letters and coordinate offers with potential employees.
Lead and manage the Legal Intern Program including the San Diego Bar Association Diversity Fellow and University of San Diego Summer Paid Internship, along with unpaid internships.
Adhere to and provide training in compliance with federal and state laws and other regulations, i.e. workplace and sexual harassment prevention training.
Lead and coordinate workforce planning and day-to-day operations of paralegals, legal assistants and secretaries.
Monitor legal support staff and attorney ratios.
Allocate secretarial and paralegal usage and ensure coverage is provided to meet Firm business needs.
Monitor paralegal billing and staff productivity. Meet with paralegals throughout the year to encourage and oversee productivity.
Develop processes for paralegals/legal assistants to obtain MCLEs and monitor compliance with state laws.
Minimum Qualifications and Experience:
Bachelor’s Degree in Human Resources Management, Business, Social Sciences or similar field of study.
Ten or more years’ related experience at the senior HR management level.
Ability to achieve goals through direct and indirect influence and collaboration.
Excellent communication skills.
A self-starter who is organized, highly motivated, takes initiative, is able to prioritize work, multi-task, work independently, and manage the demands of multiple time-sensitive tasks.
Preferred Qualifications and Experience:
Master’s Degree in a related field.
Senior Professional in Human Resources (SPHR) or SHRM Senior Certified Professional (SHRM-SCP) credential.
Membership in HR related professional organizations.
Law Firm experience.
