Best Buddies International is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization dedicated to establishing a global volunteer movement that creates opportunities for one-to-one friendships, integrated employment, leadership development, inclusive living, and family support for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD).

Best Buddies is the largest organization dedicated to ending the social, physical and economic isolation of the 200 million people worldwide with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD). Our programs empower people with IDD to form meaningful friendships with their peers, secure jobs, improve communication and advocacy skills, and live independently, while also offering support for their families.

This Vice President of People (VP of People) is responsible for leading all people functions: human resources, culture, diversity and inclusion, information technology, risk management, compliance and HQ operational functions in accordance with industry standards and company objectives and policies. Reporting to Anthony Shriver (Founder, Chairman, CEO), our VP of People works strategically with the leadership team and throughout the organization to craft the company’s vision and mission.

This hybrid position (Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday in-office) is based out of our headquarters in Miami, Florida and will include periodic travel to key events and meetings.

Core Accountabilities

The role includes direct oversight of three key People areas: People Strategy, Operations, and Culture. Additionally, this role will be responsible for Operations (Risk Management and Corporate Compliance, as well as Office Management), Contracts Compliance, and Information Technology support. The following outlines the key duties included, but not limited to:

People Strategy

Innovate and refine the organization’s human capital strategy

  • Work closely with CEO and other executive leadership to steward BBI culture
  • Create talent programs and rich career pathways for HR and extended BBI staff
  • Leverage background in staff relations and expertise in HR-related legal considerations to strengthen BBI’s impact on employees
  • Advise and play a strategic partner role to BBI leaders to identify and mitigate risk, while achieving strategic People outcomes
  • Drive organizational alignment and achievement of outcomes set forth in strategic plan through collaboration and partnership

People Operations

Provide BBI leaders with operations support during the full employment cycle from:

  • Talent recruitment and onboarding
  • Employee learning, training and development
  • Staff relations, health and safety
  • Payroll and separations
  • Total rewards: benefits and compensation

Drive BBI operational excellence in People & HR programs and initiatives

  • Use feedback mechanisms to improve HR programs and policies to ensure alignment with both employee needs and company goals

Design and implement systems via Employee Experience to regularly gather feedback from employees on key topics such as organizational culture, compensation, and benefits

People Culture

Lead the development of strategies that create strong cultures and drive key culture initiatives

Understand the elements of a healthy culture and the background in how to renovate culture if necessary

Create, implement, and innovate on initiatives and programs that align with the firm’s Diversity, Equity, Inclusion & Access strategic plan

  • Develop and innovate on the organization’s DEIA vision and turn that vision into a proactive, comprehensive, actionable, measurable strategic plan
  • Demonstrate credibility and intermediate maturity as a DEI functional head (thought leadership for the organization, includes benchmarking, and staying current on key developments)

Competencies, Qualifications and Requirements

Qualifications

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform the Core Accountabilities above and meet the requirements below. The requirements listed below are representative of the minimum knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.

Education and/or Experience Required:

• 10+ years of experience of proven human resources experience

• Prior human capital leadership role with deep knowledge of HR functions, effectively leading high-functioning teams and working with senior leadership professionals to make a significant impact on organizations

• Demonstrated success in delivering operational excellence and change initiatives at the function and organization levels

• Outstanding collaboration and influencing skills, including excellent oral and written communication skills

• Strategic and creative problem-solving skills to create and implement new systems and ideas independently, including demonstrated ability to leverage metrics (data and analytics) to enhance decision-making processes

• Ability to operate hands-on, navigating matrixed partnerships in a fast-paced and highly collaborate environment

Preferred:

• Bachelor’s degree

• Experience in a non-profit environment
