Job Description:Reporting to the Payroll Manager, the Payroll Accountant oversees the payroll verification process to ensure timely and accurate payroll processing. This position is responsible for reviewing and analyzing payroll-related supporting documentation for the accuracy of employee pay and deductions. Key responsibilities include interpreting and applying University policy, the Commonwealth Accounting Policies and Procedures Manual, the Internal Revenue Service, and the US Department of Labor regulations, as well as reviewing student FICA exemptions and international tax treaties. Additionally, this position will process all payroll-related manual journal entries and review/process after-the-fact redistributions and adjustments. The Payroll Accountant will perform numerous reconciliations including account receivable balances, payroll register totals, and quarterly and year-end reports. They will participate in special projects, including testing system upgrades, reviewing internal processes while suggesting improvements, and supporting internal and external audit requests. This position works collaboratively with other campus departments and external parties and communicates routinely with employees addressing payroll-related questions.
Minimum Qualifications:
Working knowledge of payroll operations including Federal Department of Labor laws and federal and state laws including garnishments. Direct experience using integrated accounting systems including working knowledge of payroll software applications. Advanced skills in the use of Microsoft Office Suite products including Excel. Ability to audit and analyze reports and paperwork to draw sound conclusions and take appropriate actions. Excellent oral/written communication skills and ability to work with diverse clients. Demonstrated experience in performing mathematical computations with the capability to identify, reconcile, and resolve problems/issues promptly. Attention to detail is critical. Must be organized and able to work in a fast-paced environment with strict deadlines. Ability to always maintain a high level of confidentiality and act ethically.Preferred Qualifications:
Experience processing payroll and performing payroll related accounting functions such as journal entries. Knowledge of Banner and Cognos reporting tools is highly desired.
