Controller

Summary Description:
The Controller is responsible for leading and managing all financial aspects of Cal Solar Inc. operations, including audit oversight, banking relationship, accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, monthly financial statements, and cash flows to support annual, 3-year, and 5-year operating plans (AOPs) and goals by proactively monitoring/analyzing costs, variances and trends.
Primary Responsibilities & Duties:
- Oversee accounts receivable, payable (including lien releases), project contract administration/billings, labor compliance, and payroll departments.
- Prepare all financial reports, including income statements, balance sheets, reports to shareholders, tax returns, and reports for government regulatory agencies.
- Develop, maintain, and monitor the company's quarterly and annual financial budget.
- Develop and maintain a system of internal controls, accountabilities, and budgeting/forecasting reports to provide real-time accounting, reporting and analysis.
- Daily cash flow monitoring, management, and forecasting.
- Review/record journal entries and maintain timely/accurate account reconciliations monthly, including AP/AR, balance sheet, income, and bank statements.
- Oversee all sub-subcontractor contract administration, including certified payroll.
- Manage project costing and tracking for internal and external customers.
- Manage invoicing for ongoing services provided and revenue recognition.
- Oversee preparation of the company's monthly work-in-progress (WIP) reports, and quarterly & annual reporting.
- Assist third party CPA with tax preparation.
- Assist third party administrators with preparing monthly & year-end financial statements, as well as with the application of sales tax regulations for preparation of quarterly sales tax returns.
- Coordinate & support work relating to both internal and external audits in the periodic review of the company's financial records, including integrated and project-level audits (when required). Implement agreed-upon recommendations related to areas of responsibility resulting from the audit findings.
- Communicate and enforce values, policies, and procedures to help ensure maintaining of proper accounting practices.
- Ensure accounting and financial policies and practices comply with GAAP, industry regulations, and other governing organizations.
- Oversee financial platforms/applications & accounting software systems.
- Identify areas of inefficiency to help reduce costs across the business.
- Prepare forecasting and other financial reporting for upper management.
- Develop and report ad-hoc financial reports and analyses as required by managers.
- Develop, manage, and train accounting personnel as required.

- Work closely with other departments to find efficiencies and reduce constraints.
- Promote leadership and team building throughout the entire team.
- Create, implement, enforce, and continually evaluate the effectiveness of estimating processes, capturing best practices, workflows, procedures, and standards within Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for all accounting functions, fostering a culture of continuous improvement and innovation.
- Foster open communication, team building, and sharing of best practices amongst all employees, to help create a continuous learning environment that drives team knowledge & preparedness.

- Oversee the training and development of all direct reports through the performance planning process and maintaining 1:1 meetings/check-ins, coordinating with HR to help identify available programs and training that may assist in their professional and personal development.

- Bachelor's degree in Accounting or Finance required. MBA highly desired. CPA preferred.
- 5+ years as a Controller for a Contractor with $40MM+ in annual revenue.
- 5+ years leading monthly reporting on percentage of completion and works in progress (WIPs).
- 10+ years of accounting experience required, with preferred experience a combination of public accounting and private industry.
- Strength in researching and applying GAAP.
- Prior experience in related industries (Construction, EPC, Energy) and/or emerging companies is a plus.
- Experience with accounting issues related to multiple legal entities, consolidations, intercompany transactions.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with ability to communicate effectively with internal and external stakeholders.

- Strong supervisory and leadership skills with the ability to effectively train, motivate, and hold others accountable.
- Knowledge of Sage Intacct software (high preferred) or other accounting software system.
- Skilled in Google Applications Suite (Docs, Sheets, Gmail, etc. (or similar) & advanced skillset with Microsoft Excel.
- Some travel is required within California.

The starting annual base pay for this role is between USD $165,000 and $195,000. The actual base is dependent upon many factors, such as: location, training, transferable skills, work experience, business needs and market demands. The base pay range is subject to change and may be modified in the future.
