Job Title:
Financial Controller - Real Estate and Construction
About The Role
Well-established and growth-oriented real estate and construction firm, specializing in multifamily, mixed-use, retail, and light industrial properties primarily in the metro DC area.
We are currently seeking a dynamic and proactive Financial Controller to join our accounting team. This role is pivotal in fostering a culture of collaboration and teamwork to achieve common goals. The Controller will be instrumental in mentoring and guiding team members, contributing significantly to their professional development.
Key Responsibilities
Oversee financial reporting and property accounting, including annual audits for multifamily and commercial properties. Lead the Property and Construction Accounting departments, ensuring team efficiency and goal attainment. Manage monthly accounting and reporting for a diverse property portfolio. Review Work in Progress (WIP) calculations monthly. Assist the CFO in month-end closing and investor reporting. Manage financial transactions including property acquisitions, sales, refinancing, and lease management. Supervise bank and intercompany account reconciliations. Collaborate with internal and external accounting teams for financial inquiries, tax returns, and audits. Evaluate and enhance internal financial controls. Develop and enforce financial policies, systems, and procedures. Implement and monitor internal controls to protect assets. Support corporate strategy development and execution. Prepare and review financial reports for stakeholders. Interpret financial statements for operational personnel. Manage property accounting transitions. Ensure accurate daily financial record-keeping and bank deposits. Train staff in handling complex financial transactions. Set and monitor annual goals for direct reports. Oversee management fee calculations and payroll tax reporting. Contribute to Cash Flow projections, Forecasts, KPIs, and budgeting. Lead additional projects as needed.
Qualifications
BA/BS in Accounting or Business with a focus on accounting. At least 8 years of progressive accounting experience in the multi-family and commercial real estate sector. Familiarity with financial regulations and local/state statutes. Proficiency in Excel, Yardi, Nexus, QuickBooks, Sage 300/Timberline preferred. Demonstrated leadership with a commitment to mentorship and team development. Ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment, managing multiple tasks and deadlines. Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and a collaborative approach. Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written. Initiative-taking, accountable, and dedicated to continuous improvement. Data-driven with a focus on enhancing performance.
