PRIMARY PURPOSE : The Chief Academic Officer is responsible for the overall management of the district's curriculum and instruction function. Lead the strategic planning and implementation of curriculum and instruction programs. Ensure that the development and delivery of curriculum and instructional programs are effective and efficient, incorporate district goals, and support student achievement. The Chief Academic Officer will direct all Curriculum and Instructional departments.

QUALIFICATIONS: Education/Certification: Valid Texas Principal/or Mid-Management Certificate required Valid Texas Superintendent's Certificate preferred Special Knowledge/Skills: Advanced knowledge of curriculum and instruction Ability to interpret data and evaluate instructional programs and teaching effectiveness Ability to manage budget and personnel Ability to interpret and implement policy and procedures Exceptional communication, public relations, and interpersonal skills Experience: Appropriate experience in school management Total of 10 yrs. in education and a minimum of 5 yrs. in instructional leadership roles

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES: Instructional and Program Management

Oversee instructional and curriculum programs to support student achievement. Monitor and evaluate instructional programs using student data, research and through collaboration to determine effectiveness and improve outcomes. Apply research and data to improve the content, sequence, and outcomes of the teaching-learning process. Work with appropriate staff to develop, maintain, and revise curriculum documents based on systematic review and analysis. Engage instructional staff in evaluating and selecting instructional tools and materials to meet student learning needs. Ensure the use of technology in the teaching-learning process. Ensure that the necessary time, resources, and materials to support accomplishment of educational goals are available. Participate in the district-level decision-making process to establish and review the district's goals and objectives and major classroom instructional programs of the district. Actively support the efforts of others to achieve district goals and objectives and campus performance objectives (academic excellence indicators). Secure consultants, specialists, and other community resources to assist principals and instructional staff in attaining objectives. Provide effective staff development activities that incorporate the mission of the district, program evaluation outcomes, and input from teachers and others. Policy, Reports, and Law

Ensure compliance with policies established by federal and state law, State Board of Education rule, and local board policy in curriculum and instructional area. Compile, maintain, and present all reports, records, and other documents required for the administration of all federal and specially funded programs. Follow district safety protocols and emergency procedures. Executive Directors/Specialists

Direct and evaluate the Executive Directors as they supervise assigned campuses. Supervise and evaluate the District's Instructional Specialists in all academic areas. Budget

Administer the curriculum and instruction budget and ensure that programs are cost effective and funds are managed prudently.

Compile budgets and cost estimates based on documented program needs. Personnel Management

Prepare, review, and revise job descriptions in Curriculum and Instructional department. Evaluate job performance of employees to ensure effectiveness. Assist with recruitment, selection, and training of personnel and make sound recommendations relative to personnel placement, assignment, retention, discipline, and dismissal. Assist with the implementation of the designated teacher appraisal system; may serve as second appraiser. Communication

Ensure that established goals and expectations are communicated clearly, consistently and in a timely manner. Provide timely and effective oral and written communication with principals, teachers, staff, parents, and community.

Demonstrate skill in conflict resolution with administrators, parents, teachers, staff, and community. Monitor professional research and disseminate ideas and information to other professionals. Professional Growth and Community Relations

Pursue professional development through reading, attending conferences, and involvement with related agencies. Articulate the district's mission, instructional philosophy, and curriculum implementation strategies to the community. Demonstrate awareness of district and community needs and initiate activities to meet those needs. Represent the district as directed by the Superintendent in activities involving other school systems, institutions, agencies, and professional or community groups. Other

Prepare and deliver presentations on curriculum and instruction issues to the board, principals, teachers, parents, and community groups. Attend all board meetings. Ensure compliance with local, state and federal laws related to curriculum and instruction. Stay informed of state and federal policy changes that could impact the district. Perform all duties in a safe manner to avoid injury to oneself and/or to others. Perform other related duties as assigned

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Supervise and evaluate the performance of assigned personnel.
