This position is part of the Plant Operations, Government Publishing Office in Washington, District of Columbia Responsibilities Proofreads, marks up and revises typographical, spelling, and style errors in both straight and tabular matter. Manually and electronically prepares copies for typesetting in accordance with appropriate style manuals. Operates computer terminals to produce databases. Revises galley corrections and page proofs; Troubleshoots files to identify and fix errors. Utilizes Standard Generalized Markup Language (SGML), Extensible Markup Language (XML) and associated programs to proofread and typeset government publications. Manipulates various file types to make corrections, author's alterations and updates. Keyboards coded manuscript with a high degree of accuracy. Troubleshoots files to identify and fix errors. Requirements Conditions of Employment Qualifications To qualify for the Proofreader/Keyboarder, KI -4403-00, you must meet the following requirements: To minimally qualify for the KI-4403-00 level, you must meet the requirement below: Applicants must meet Screen Out/Job Element #1: Screen Out/Job Element #1: Ability to do the work of the position without more than normal supervision: Typical Duties related to the work of the Proofreader Keyboarder Position must include: 1) Proofreading books, newspapers, or magazine proofs for publication or general distribution and must demonstrate skill in manipulating electronic files in order to make corrections, 2) key manuscripts with a high degree of speed and accuracy, working in a fast-paced environment, typesetting material, and applying and interpreting proofreader marks, and 3) This requires knowledge of printing composition technology, processes, and terminology, skill in using and interpreting standard proofreader marks, and skill in using personal computers and software related to the printing/composing trade. NOTE: To meet the above screen out: A) Applicants must have completed: a formal, recognized printing apprenticeship; OR B) Possess substantially equivalent practical experience in the composing trade (at least four years) in proofreading books or magazine proofs or comparable copies for publication or general distribution would be considered substantially equivalent practical experience. Experience such as copy holder is NOT considered as practical experience. In addition, applicants must have at least one year of journey person-level experience in proofreading books or magazine proofs for publication or general distribution OR two years of journey person level experience in reading proofs on a daily newspaper. The Additional Job Elements are: Technical Practices (theoretical, precise, artistic) Ability to Interpret Instructions, Specifications, etc. (other than blueprint reading). Ability To Use and Maintain Tools and Equipment Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Background Investigation: To ensure the accomplishment of its mission, the GPO requires every employee to be reliable and trustworthy. To meet those standards, all selected applicants must undergo and successfully completed a background investigation for a suitability clearance. This review could include financial issues such as delinquency in the payment of debts, child support and/or tax obligations, as well as certain criminal offenses and illegal use or possession of drugs. Depending on the type of background investigation required, the security process may take between 6 weeks to 12 months. The Agency may rescind the tentative offer, if the candidate is unable to obtain an interim clearance. Working Conditions: Performed in an office setting; may be required to visit other sections, whose work is performed in a production environment (exposure to noise, ink mist, odor/fumes, spray powder & paper dust from machinery. Ear/Eye protection and safety shoes are provided as necessary. The Selectee will work shift 1 during a required initial training period of 60 to 90 days. Selectees may be assigned to shifts 2 and 3 after completing training period. To meet those standards, all selected applicants must undergo and successfully complete a background investigation for a Moderate Risk Public Trust.
