Examples of Duties
Plans, supervises and conducts audits of County Departments, operational areas and outside agencies under County supervision in order to determine if programs, operations, services and activities comply with applicable laws, regulations and policies Gathers preliminary information and determines the data, records and procedures that are necessary to analyze and develops methods to obtain necessary information Surveys and interviews staff of department being audited; analyzes transactions, documents, records, reports, internal controls, procedures, and other applicable activities and information and assesses compliance with applicable laws, regulations and policies Documents data gathering techniques, analyses, and findings; discusses apparent deficiencies with appropriate personnel; identifies needed corrective action; prepares and presents findings in writing and orally Follows up with appropriate personnel to ensure approved recommendations and/or corrective actions are implemented Develops and implements auditing procedures Serves as a technical advisor to County departments during systems development by providing advice on necessary internal controls, audit trails and desirable operating or reporting features Reviews and reconciles accounts and inventories maintained by the County Performs special projects as requested which deal with alleged fraud or abuse, legal issues, monetary impacts, confidential matters, etc. Conducts special research and prepares special reports upon request Monitors and reviews financial and compliance reports involving state and federal funding Acts as liaison between County departments and external audit firm during the County's annual audit Minimum Qualifications
Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with a degree in accounting, business administration, or related field and three (3) years of experience in accounting, internal and/or external auditing; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Management Preference:
Licensure or certification as a certified public accountant, internal auditor, fraud examiner, information system auditor, professional engineer, or attorney is preferred.

Driving is an essential function of this position. To be considered, you must have a valid driver's license with an acceptable driving record. If your driver's license is from another state, you will be required to obtain and show proof of a valid NC driver's license within 60 days of hire.

Knowledge of the methods, procedures and policies of Cumberland County as such pertains to the performance of the essential duties of the Senior Internal Auditor position Knowledge of principles and practices of accounting and auditing work Knowledge of the County's financial and budget systems to include chart of accounts and daily/monthly entries and reports Knowledge of the laws, ordinances, standards and regulations pertaining to the essential duties and responsibilities of the position Knowledge of effective written and oral communication skills Knowledge of the organization of the department and of related departments and agencies Knowledge of terminology and related professional languages used as pertains to work responsibilities Skill to demonstrate exceptional ability to exercise sound judgment in complex issues while representing the Management Team or leading projects, ensuring strategic decision-making and effective problem-solving Ability to clearly understand the occupational hazards and safety precautions required to perform the essential functions of the work Ability to maintain cooperative and effective relationships with intra- and interdepartmental personnel, as well as any external entities with which position interacts
