The Veterinary & Biomedical Sciences (VBS) Department in the College of Agriculture, Food and Environmental Sciences (CAFES) at South Dakota State University (SDSU) is offering an exciting career opportunity in a tenure-track faculty position in Veterinary Infectious Disease. We are looking for a creative and innovative professional with understanding of food animal agriculture, infectious disease and expertise in veterinary virology/microbiology to explore innovative processes and develop cutting-edge tools that will enhance and strengthen the health of food animal agriculture. The ideal candidate will develop and maintain an extramurally funded research program, train the next generation of veterinary scientists and food animal veterinarians, and contribute to the diagnostic mission of the department.

The VBS Department has a long history of national recognition for research in veterinary infectious disease, which is fully supported by newly renovated and well-equipped laboratory spaces. Equipment and expertise within the department currently support a wide range of infectious disease research activities and include next-generation sequencing capabilities, immunophenotyping and BSL-3 facilities. Access to on-campus supercomputing is also available.

The South Dakota Animal Disease Research & Diagnostic Laboratory (ADRDL) is housed within the VBS Department. The ADRDL is an accredited, full-service veterinary diagnostic laboratory that serves the needs of veterinarians, animal agriculture, wildlife agencies and pet owners nationwide. Based on qualifications, this position may acquire section leader responsibilities within the ADRDL.

The Professional Program in Veterinary Medicine (PPVM) is another important facet of the VBS Department. The PPVM is a cooperative program with the University of Minnesota College of Veterinary Medicine (UMN CVM) and encompasses the first two years of the professional veterinary curriculum. Students complete 2 years of their Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) degree education at SDSU, and then finish their final two years at the UMN CVM. This position will support teaching in the PPVM with a focus on viral and bacterial pathogenesis and prevention/control of infectious disease.

This is a 12-month, full time, benefit eligible, tenure-track faculty position. Documented qualifications and experience will determine appointment rank. This position is supervised by the VBS Department Head.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

The primary responsibilities of this position are to develop and lead an active, independent and extramurally funded research program focused on veterinary virology/microbiology with emphasis in infectious disease, classical and/or molecular diagnostics, host/pathogen interaction, and/or vaccinology to meet the needs of animal agriculture and a broad range of stakeholders. This position will also contribute to instructing and/or training undergraduate, graduate and veterinary students, along with post-doctoral scientists and laboratory staff. Additionally, contributions to the diagnostic mission of the ADRDL is also expected.

SALARY:

Commensurate with qualifications. We offer a generous retirement plan that includes 6% matching, 10 hours of annual leave each month, 9.34 hours of sick leave each month, and eleven paid holidays. Relocation benefits are available according to the university's guidelines.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:Ph.D. degree in Biological Sciences, or Veterinary Sciences; OR D.V.M., V.M.D or equivalent veterinary degree AND an advanced degree in Biological or Veterinary Sciences or a closely related field with an emphasis in veterinary virology/microbiology.Ability to establish an extramurally funded research program that focuses on diseases of food animals.Ability to establish research collaborations and work as a contributing team member.Potential to produce peer-reviewed publications related to expertise.Potential to teach undergraduate, graduate and professional veterinary students.Knowledge of veterinary diagnostic laboratory services.Knowledge of food animal agriculture and production in the United States.Excellent written, verbal and interpersonal communication skills.
