This is a full-time, on-site position in Santa Monica, CA.The

Controller

is responsible for maintaining and reporting on a GAAP compliant set of accounting records (trial balance, general ledger, and related reporting.) The Controller ensures that all financial transactions and reports are accounted for accurately, timely, and reflect the proper GAAP treatment and internal controls. The Controller will maintain supportive, collaborative, respectful and productive relationships with their team, department managers, and leadership, providing their internal clients with the reporting information they need to run their business units.RESPONSIBILITIES:Lead and supervise the accounting department to maintain a complete and accurate set of books, including general ledger, chart of accounts and all subledgers, along with all account reconciliations and other supporting documentation.Spearhead company’s ROI on its Financial ERP system across finance, accounting, reporting and compliance. Utilize the system with a best practices approach, to maximize its utility, impact and value.Develop and maintain financial statements that would earn an unqualified, clean opinion if subject to a CPA firm audit: compliant with legislation, generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP) and free from any material misstatements of financial results and position.Review, analyze, and reconcile all general ledger accounts, submodules (including inventory, AR, AP and fixed assets) and any investment and other asset accounts.Perform month-end close and publish all monthly and other financial statements in accordance with GAAP, on a timely basis.Ensure that all point-of-sale transactions are properly accounted for, including sales, sales tax, merchant fees, deposits and all other POS related accounting.Ensure that all inventory-related transactions are properly accounted for, including purchases, sales, returns, dispositions, valuation, and all other inventory-related accounting matters. Reporting.Develop, maintain, and publish to management team, a monthly reporting package in connection with month-end and year-end close.Prepare special reports by collecting, analyzing, and summarizing information and trends.Consistently analyze financial data and present financial reports in an accurate and timely manner; clearly communicate monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements; monitor progress and changes and keep senior leadership abreast of SD’s financial status.Maintain appropriate financial procedures and internal controls for cash, banking activities and investments to ensure adequate working capital and to safeguard cash.Maintain up-to-date knowledge and implementation of organizational policies and procedures, federal and state policies, and accounting standards.Design the workflow and personnel needs of the accounting department by determining required roles, responsibilities and accountabilities that support efficient, timely, accurate and compliant work product.Utilize SD's ERP system (“RPS”) to the full extent of its functionality -- ensure all ERP financial accounting best practices are used to drive productivity, efficiency, accuracy and timeliness of accounting.Establish and maintain SOPs for all aspects of SD’s accounting and reporting activities. • Direct the conversion to, and ongoing operations of, the accounting department to a paperless, digital environment.Assist in procurement of adequate insurance coverage, including workers’ compensation, property and liability coverage and others.Monitor and confirm financial condition by conducting audits and providing information to external auditors.Ensure compliance with local, state, and federal government requirements.Maintain best-in-class accounting staff by recruiting, selecting, orienting, and training employees. Identify training needs of all accounting staff.Maintain best practices results by coaching, counseling, and disciplining employees, planning, monitoring, and appraising job results. Review compensation plans and strategies, including plans to support accounting staff professional development.Cultivate a high-functioning, technical and customer service-oriented accounting team.Create a culture within the accounting team of living our values, including making and keeping commitments.Learn and utilize appropriate brain science methods and techniques in helping to continuously transform performance and culture.Assist leadership in the annual budgeting and planning process; administer and review all financial plans and compare to actual results with a view to identify, explain, and correct variances as appropriate.Play a strong role in converting the accounting department from its present state to becoming a paperless environment.Support the VP Finance as needed.Requirements

QUALIFICATIONS/SKILLS DESIRED:Financial leader with six+ years of accounting and finance management experience, ideally beginning in accounting and audit, followed by experience gathering, evaluating, presenting and reporting financial information to executive teams and external stakeholders.Ideally will have experience in a matrix organization with multiple locations, and profit and cost centers.Well skilled in ERP-level financial accounting and reporting systems –both in usage and designing enhancements to promote efficiency.Technology savvy, with experience selecting and overseeing software installations and managing relationships with software vendors.Strong aptitude for continuous learning to utilize the best practices of brain and behavioral science and emotional intelligence. Be coachable.Minimum of a BA in Accounting; CPA and/or CFA, preferred.Advanced skills in Microsoft Office’s suite of business applications.Experience coordinating audit activities and managing reporting, budget development and analysis, accounts payable and receivable, general ledger, inventory, and payroll.Keen analytic, organization and problem-solving skills which allows for strategic data interpretation.Strong interpersonal and communication skills; experience in effectively communicating key data, including presentations to senior management, board, or other outside partners.Ability and desire to translate complex financial concepts to individuals at all levels including finance and non-finance managers.Personal qualities of integrity, credibility, and unwavering commitment to the company's mission; a proactive, hands-on accounting technician who will own the responsibility for accounting compliance and accuracy and, in partnership with the VP Finance, the responsibility for finance.
