Shaw University seeks an exceptional, forward-thinking and enthusiastic leader to serve as the Dean for the School of Humanities, Arts and Sciences. Reporting to the Vice President for Academic Affairs, the Dean serves as the administrator for academic programs in Biology, Exercise Science (Fitness & Wellness / Pre-Athletic Training), Interdisciplinary Studies, Mass Communications, Music, Psychology, General Education (English, Mathematics, and Religion & Philosophy). The Dean is responsible for ensuring innovative and transformative teaching, research, and scholarship in the College of Humanities, Arts and Science. The Dean will guide curricular revision and programmatic assessment, foster and encourage strong scholarship, and ensure internal/external client satisfaction through effective management of personnel, projects, materials, budgets, fundraising, and corporate/stakeholder relationships.Essential Job Functions :Provide leadership in advocating for excellence in higher education by encouraging and facilitating high standards of academic quality.Execute the strategic vision for comprehensive academic planning, student recruitment and retention initiatives, and policy development.Inspire leadership and assure continued prominence of the faculty through recruitment and development.Ensure compliance with university policies and procedures.Engage corporate and external stakeholders in academic program evaluation.Secure external funding to support the university’s mission.Effectively apply knowledge of academic programs to manage outcomes-based assessment.Promote cross-discipline-specific activities within the college.Advise the Vice President on academic policy, personnel, and budget matters.Work effectively with faculty in developing their Professional Development Plan (PDP).Other duties as assigned by supervisor.Supervisory ResponsibilitiesFT Faculty; PT-Adjunct Faculty; Program Directors and Administrative Support Personnel.Required Education and/or ExperienceEarned Doctorate from an accredited institution in relevant fields.Five years of progressive experience in college-level teaching and administration.Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.Strong collaborative skills and ability to work as part of a team.Prior supervisory experience at the Department Chair, Division Head, or Dean level.Strong research skills and understanding of federal grant regulations.Proven track record of securing external funding.Excellent organizational skills.Must meet the minimum credential standards of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC).Preferred Education and/or ExperienceStrong time-management and decision-making skills.Experience with publishing and/or presenting research.Demonstrated commitment to cultural diversity.Industry Experience.Certificates, Licenses, or RegistrationsMust meet the minimum credential standards of the SACSCOC.Other CompetenciesMust have a philosophy consistent with the Mission, Vision, and Core Values of the organization, including strong oral and written presentation skills and the ability to manage multiple projects.Application RequirementsA candidate must provide a current resume, an application cover letter with statements of teaching philosophy, and three current letters of reference.Any potential hire is contingent upon the candidate’s ordering official transcripts of the highest graduate-level degree(s) awarded.Candidates are responsible for any potential travel and/or relocation expenses incurred.We consider applicants for all positions without regard to race, color, religion, creed, gender, national origin, age, disability, veteran status, or any other legally protected status.
