Job Description:
As a Senior Electrical Designer (PV Focus) at Alt-Solar (Under Alt-Group), you'll play a vital role in ensuring the efficient and safe integration of solar photovoltaic (PV) systems into the electrical grid. You'll leverage your expertise in AC and DC systems and electrical design to optimise system performance, ensure code compliance, and contribute to the success of Alt-Group's renewable energy projects. This role offers the opportunity to work on diverse PV installations, collaborate with a passionate team of engineers, and contribute to a sustainable future.
Key Responsibilities:
Develop detailed electrical designs for PV systems, including single-line diagrams, equipment specifications, and cable routing plans.
Conduct thorough site assessments to evaluate existing electrical infrastructure and find optimal system integration points.
Perform comprehensive power system studies and analysis, considering factors like load profiles, voltage drop calculations, and harmonic distortion related to G99 applications.
Size and select appropriate electrical components, such as transformers, inverters, switchgear, and protective devices, ensuring compatibility with the PV system and grid interconnection requirements.
Calculate cable sizes and conduct containment strategies, adhering to relevant UK regulations and safety standards (e.g., Building Regulations, BS 7671: Wiring Regulations).
Collaborate with the PV Design team and other stakeholders to ensure seamless integration of electrical and mechanical aspects of the project.
Prepare and review technical documentation, including design drawings, calculations, and equipment specifications.
Stay up to date with the latest advancements in PV technology, grid interconnection standards, and electrical design best practices.
Participate in project meetings and discussions, providing technical expertise and ensuring clear communication between design, sales, and construction teams.
Manage and prioritise multiple projects simultaneously, meeting deadlines.
Present technical information to internal and external stakeholders in a clear and concise manner.
Mentor junior designers.
Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering or a closely related field.
Minimum of 2 years of experience in electrical design, with a demonstrably strong understanding of AC power systems and a keen interest in renewable energy.
A proven track record of successfully contributing to electrical design projects (experience with PV systems a plus).
Strong understanding of AC power systems, and cable calculations.
In-depth knowledge of UK electrical design regulations and standards (e.g., BS 7671: Wiring Regulations).
Proficiency in electrical design software (e.g., AutoCAD, Trimble ProDesign, ETAP, PSCAD).
Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
Excellent communication, collaboration, and interpersonal skills.
Thorough attention to detail and a commitment to producing high-quality work.
Ability to work independently, manage time effectively, and prioritize tasks under pressure.
