Job SummaryThe Undergraduate Advising and Success (UAS) unit is a student support, advising, academic assistance, retention, and service-oriented unit in the Division of Academic Affairs. Assisting students from admission through graduation, our mission is to be the single point of entry to provide resources and academic advising for new and continuing students to develop the skills and knowledge necessary to achieve academic success and graduate in a timely manner. Reporting to the Managing Director, the Assistant Director, Education Student Success Center assists in the oversight of day-to-day operations and activities of the Student Success Center (SSC), in addition to serving in the role as an advisor. Working independently, under limited supervision, the Assistant Director assists the Managing Director in leading, developing, coordinating, implementing, and assessing unit activities, advising services, and programs in accordance with California State University (CSU) and San Jose State University (SJSU) policies to ensure academic success for all students in the SSC.Key ResponsibilitiesProvides general oversight of the day-to-day operations of the SSC to ensure excellent customer service that supports student success at all levels.Implements business processes for the academic year, and relays appropriate feedback to meet demands and specified timelines.With direction from the SSC Managing Director, organize and coordinate hiring, training, supervision, and evaluation of student assistants.With direction from the SSC Managing Director, assist with the coordination, onboarding, and training of professional staff.With direction from the SSC Managing Director, provide coordination, implementation, and advising for Spartan Accelerated Graduate Education (SAGE).Collaborate with SSC Managing Director to develop and implement center specific data collection and tracking strategies to evaluate effectiveness and quality of programs.Collaborate with SSC Managing Director to produce and submit regular center reports.Maintain knowledge of high-impact practices and research in academic advising.Provide accurate, timely, and consistent academic advising to students pursuing majors and/or minors in SSC in the areas of general education, course planning, academic planning, change of major, probation, and disqualification in accordance with CSU, SJSU, and college policies using individual, group, and/or electronic means.Refer students to appropriate on-and off-campus resources to meet individual needs.Interact and confer with UAS administrators, faculty, and other campus advising staff as necessary.Maintain institutional knowledge including admissions requirements, programs, course changes, deadlines, costs, college-wide initiatives and requirements, transfer requirements, and state and federal mandates.Knowledge, Skills & AbilitiesAbility to determine proper techniques and actions to utilize while engaged with individuals, including de-escalation.General knowledge of research-based and data-informed practices.Ability to work independently and as part of a team.Demonstrated ability to oversee projects and provide guidance and direction for the work of others.Demonstrate strong interpersonal skills and ability to work cooperatively in a group with diverse backgrounds, perspectives, styles and goals.Ability to maintain confidentiality and appropriately handle sensitive communications with employees and external agencies.Ability to interpret and define problems, evaluate and analyze situations, draw valid conclusions, project various consequences, and adopt effective courses of action.Ability to maximize unit productivity through training colleagues in use of appropriate tools, new skills, and procedures.Ability to interpret and apply CSU and SJSU academic policies and procedures to individual situations.Strong oral and written communication skills, including thorough knowledge of English grammar, business writing, punctuation and spelling. Ability to compose and appropriately format various types of correspondence, reports and communications. Ability to create materials and presentations.Working knowledge of software applications such as word processing, spreadsheets, database management, and the internet. Ability to use PeopleSoft and working knowledge of student success related applications such as EAB, MyGPS, and others.Ability to advise students individually or in groups on routine matters.Ability to interface with a variety of campus offices through the establishment of liaison connections to maximize student success.Ability to communicate with constituents in a professional and respectful manner.Required QualificationsEquivalent to graduation from a four-year college or university in a related field plus upper division or graduate coursework in counseling techniques, interviewing and conflict resolution where such are job related.Four years of progressively responsible professional student services work experience which includes experience in advising students individually and in groups, and in analysis and resolution of complex student services problems.A master's degree in Counseling, Clinical Psychology, Social Work or a job-related field may be substituted for one year of professional experience.A doctorate degree and the appropriate internship or clinical training in counseling, guidance or a job-related field may be substituted for two years of the required professional experience for positions with a major responsibility for professional, personal or career counseling.Preferred QualificationsMaster's in Higher education administration, education, Educational Counseling, Clinical Psychology, Social Work or directly related discipline.Minimum of five years of experience working directly in higher education.Demonstrated advising experience.Demonstrated working knowledge of academic/general education requirements, admissions and registration processes, and resources available to students.Experience supervising students.Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships within a diverse multicultural environment.CompensationClassification: Student Services Professional IVAnticipated Hiring Range: $6,667/month - $7,000/monthCSU Salary Range: $6,019/month - $8,585/monthSan Jose State University offers employees a comprehensive benefits package typically worth 30-35% of your base salary.
