The position is located in the Office of the Legal Adviser (L). The Office of the Legal Adviser advises and represents the Bureaus and missions of the Department; the Secretary and senior leadership; and, through the Secretary, the Executive Branch on all legal and legal policy issues arising in connection with U.S. foreign policy and the work of the Department.Duties

Conducts extensive, thorough research in a variety of legal and non-legal databases to locate appropriate data, applicable precedents, decisions, and/or legislative history; interprets and evaluates evidence.Prepares comprehensive litigation reports and other legal documents as assigned and prepares digests of selected decisions or opinions.Consults and coordinates with the DOJ Assistant U.S. Attorneys and defense counsel across the country and makes recommendations regarding steps to be taken in the handling of cases.Prepares responsive materials for production in litigation and administrative proceedings, evaluates law enforcement privileges, and coordinates with Department FOIA teams, as appropriate.Drafts letters, memoranda, emails, etc., including to opposing counsel in litigation matters.Salary

Federal applicants must have served 52 weeks at the next lower grade to satisfy time-in-grade restrictions, per 5CFR 300, Subpart F.Applicants must have 1 year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-12 level in the Federal service which provided the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills and abilities to perform the duties of the position.Qualifying specialized experience must demonstrate the following:Experience supporting litigation in federal courts, including conducting legal research and assisting with court filings.Experience with federal law enforcement authorities and operations.There is no substitute of education for specialized experience for the GS-13 position.Education
