Job Description

The Protein Therapeutics Department in Gilead is seeking a Senior Research Scientist II, an expert in biologics discovery, to expand our protein sciences capabilities further. The candidate will join the Protein Biochemistry team, a core Research team in Gilead, whose mission is to design, engineer, and produce high-quality target proteins in recombinant forms to support therapeutics discovery efforts. Your expertise in structure biology, passion for protein engineering, and skills in protein expression, purification, and biophysical characterization are crucial to our team. The scientist will lead a small team to produce challenging target proteins fit for binder discovery and engineering workflows, such as membrane proteins and protein complexes.

The candidate is expected to fulfill part of his/her role at the bench, leading a small team of scientists to develop and implement innovative protein sciences approaches to enable hard-to-drug targets for large molecule projects. Familiarity with computational approaches for protein engineering and industry experience working in a project matrix environment is essential.

The candidate is expected to be a Protein Therapeutics Core Team Member, playing a pivotal role in guiding Large Molecule project teams forward. Your leadership will be instrumental in fostering effective collaboration across all drug discovery functions, including Biology—inflammation, Oncology, and Virology therapeutic areas, Biologics Discovery and Engineering, Structural and Computational Biology, and Biophysical and Biochemical Assay Technologies. The candidate will have a proven track record of mentoring and developing scientists at senior and junior levels.

This role also involves strengthening the infrastructure, processes, and vision of the Protein Biochemistry team within Gilead, focusing on advancing our understanding and application of protein sciences in drug discovery.

The position will require the scientist to work creatively, collaboratively, and in a fast-paced environment.

Education and Technical Skills:

Ph.D. in structure biology, biochemistry, molecular biology, or other related disciplines. A minimal 5+ years of highly relevant post-graduate protein research experience in an academic or industry setting; 8+ years of relevant research experience in an industry setting is preferred.

A proven track record of independently producing quality proteins from several expression hosts, including hard-to-produce membrane proteins and protein complexes, is required.

Training in classical protein production processes and techniques (Molecular Biology, small-scale expression and purification, affinity capture, ion exchange, size exclusion chromatography using AKTA chromatographic instruments, large-scale protein purification process development, and optimization (milligrams)).

Expert knowledge of protein sciences analytics (sequence alignment, protein structure analysis using modeling software, SDS-PAGE analysis, Western blot, FPLC and HPLC, DLS, DSF, Mass Spectrometry, Mass Photometry).

Ability to establish and foster productive collaborations with internal and external partners. Large-molecule project lead experience is required.

Excellent communication and presentation skills; works independently and as a team player.

Attention to detail, accurate record keeping, and good lab citizenship practices are essential.

The salary range for this position is: $191,335.00 - $247,610.00. Gilead considers a variety of factors when determining base compensation, including experience, qualifications, and geographic location. These considerations mean actual compensation will vary. This position may also be eligible for a discretionary annual bonus, discretionary stock-based long-term incentives (eligibility may vary based on role), paid time off, and a benefits package. Benefits include company-sponsored medical, dental, vision, and life insurance plans.
