DEPARTMENT OVERVIEW

The Disability Resource Center (DRC) leads UC Santa Cruz in providing educational equity and a welcoming environment for students with disabilities. The DRC identifies legally mandated accommodations that address disabling barriers and works with faculty and students to remove or mitigate various barriers.

JOB SUMMARY

Reporting to the Assistant Director of Auxiliary Services at the Disability Resources Center (DRC), the DRC Accessible Media Coordinator is the recognized subject matter expert in alternative formats and accessible technologies. This individual oversees the Accessible Media Unit, which encompasses the DRC Inclusive Computing and Technology (ICAT) Lab, Alternative Format Remediations, and Assistive Technology. The role involves acting as the key liaison for digital accessibility across all academic departments, alongside offering training and resources to faculty, staff, and students as needed.

APPOINTMENT INFORMATION

Budgeted Salary:

$74,000 - $80,300 / Annually. Salary commensurate with skills, qualifications and experience.

Schedule Information:

Full-time, Fixed

Percentage of Time: 100%, 40 Hours per Week

Days of the Week: Mon-Fri

JOB DUTIES

50% - Student Services - Accessible Technology & Alternate Media

Develops and maintains processes for accessible media and assistive technology support in the classroom.

Maintains regular contact with academic division/department staff and faculty.

Actively supports the ADA interactive process.

Actively communicates and collaborates with necessary campus partners.

Consults regularly with DRC Staff to ensure accommodation compliance and effective communication.

Conducts regular training sessions for all student staff on required and related DRC accommodations, ADA, and other compliance issues.

Identifies providers who can supply texts and instructional materials.

Collaborates with the Business Manager on the vendor engagement process.

Advises the DRC Leadership team to ensure that students are supported in their use of accessible materials.

Conducts assessment meetings with students approved to receive alternate format materials to recommend formats and assistive tech tools for reading.

Works closely with the Service Coordinators who make referrals to the Alt Media unit.

Meets with DRC students to assess and determine appropriate alternate format and assistive technology.

25% - Campus Liaison

Works closely with faculty and ITS to ensure access to the learning management system.

Develops protocol and workflow processes to facilitate collaboration with faculty and the DRC.

Develops a communication plan for communicating with faculty, staff, and students throughout the academic year.

Provides educational training to faculty and staff to ensure their educational content and course materials are accessible.

Consults on accessible media and assistive technology needs with professors.

Troubleshoots issues for faculty, students, and staff related to accessible media and assistive technology accommodations.

15% - Resource Management and Supervision

Oversees the Inclusive Computing and Technology (ICAT) Lab.

As needed, oversees a small group of student employees assisting with file remediation and student assistive technology demos.

Tracks production and procurement of materials for periodic and annual analysis to review for process improvements.

Conducts ongoing research on new products, workflow and best practices in the field.

Compiles data and assists in the completion of reports.

10% - Auxiliary Service Accommodations Support & Other

Assists in managing accommodation requests for other Auxiliary Services units.

Acts as backup in absence of primary coordinator of other Auxiliary Services.

Performs other duties, as assigned, as needed to support the DRC's Mission and goals.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

Advanced degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training.

Strong knowledge of the legal framework involving the provision of auxiliary aids and accessible materials for students with disabilities.

Experience with conversion and delivery of text into alternate accessible formats.

Strong interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills.

2-3 years experience working in education or social service-oriented office environments.

Strong analytical and problem solving skills.

Experience serving students with disabilities.

Strong technology knowledge, skills, and fluency in using hardware and software.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Assistive Technology Certification - RESNA or similar training

Familiarity with university and DRC systems.

Experience with public speaking or presenting workshops.

Past experience working in a Disability Resource Center.

SPECIAL CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT

Selected candidate will be required to pass a pre-employment criminal history background check.

Ability to work long periods of time at a computer with or without accommodation.

Ability to safely perform the physical requirements necessary to move light to moderate objects up to 60 lbs., with or without accommodation.

The selected candidate will be required to work all scheduled hours on-site.
