POSITION SUMMARY:

Reporting to the Controller and the Vice President of Finance and serving as a people-leader within the Finance department, the Assistant Controller supports the establishment, maintenance and execution of the organization's accounting principles, practices, and procedures. In conjunction with Finance leadership, the Assistant Controller supports the oversight of the treasury, accounting, auditing, grant reporting, tax, risk management, internal controls and audit functions. Leverages industry knowledge and best practices to promote the mission and vision of the Finance department and Howard Brown Health as well as supports culture enhancement and management efforts.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Manages and develops a high performing team of accounting professionals through establishment of performance goals and development planning. Supports the objectives and strategy for the Finance department as they relate to the overall strategy of Howard Brown.

Oversees monthly general ledger close and reconciliation process and subsequent preparation of accurate and timely monthly financial statements, variance reports, grant expenditure reports and voucher packages, and ad hoc financial analyses.

In conjunction with department leadership, facilitates Finance department communication with wider Howard Brown management team, providing timely information and analysis to support agency’s goals and initiatives.

Ensures that all federal, state and local corporate filings are completed in a timely manner, and all necessary extensions are obtained, including but not limited to: Federal 990’s, AG-990-IL, Federal 990-T and IL-990-T, IL ST-1 and 1099s.

Oversees financial audits, including preparation of provided by client (PBC) workpapers, coordination of the completion of the Schedule of Expenditures of Federal Awards (SEFA) for the OMB Circular A-133, communication with external auditors during audit process, and preparing audited financial statement reports and footnotes.

Ensures that policies and procedures (internal controls) are in place to provide reasonable assurance that company assets are protected. Coordinates and oversees activities relative to internal controls documentation and testing and segregation of duties.

Ensures that company financial records, under responsibility, are maintained in compliance with company accounting policies and procedures and U.S. G.A.A.P.

Facilitates treasury management functions under the direction of CFO and Controller.

Interfaces with contract and grant accountants to ensure that all revenue is properly accrued and recognized, all grant funding is received, and that A/R aging reconciles to general ledger as part of monthly close process.

Cross trains on all accounting functions to serve as backup resource.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE:

Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution of higher learning in Business Administration, Accounting, Finance or related discipline required.

Minimum five (5) years progressive Accounting and/or Finance experience required. Experience working in public accounting with a focus in Audit preferred. Of the five (5) years professional experience requirement, a minimum of two (2) years human capital management experience required. Experience in healthcare setting preferred.

CERTIFICATION/LICENSE:

Certified Public Accountant preferred.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES (K/S/A)

Functional and proficient knowledge of G.A.A.P. for non-profit and/or healthcare organizations

Functional and proficient knowledge of accounting and budgeting software systems including Excel, Powerpoint, Word, Financial Edge and Floqast

Ability to collaborate effectively while possessing the ability to be self-directed, motivated and take initiative

Strong communication abilities including written, oral and listening
