The Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine seeks a Med Tech I to join the Bacteriology team at the Animal Health Diagnostic Center. The Medical Technologist utilizes their attention to quality and knowledge of scientific processes to perform high level microbiology testing procedures to meet client needs. This person is extremely reliable, flexible in dealing with unpredictable workloads and work schedules, and has exemplary time management skills. Their positive attitude allows them to effectively communicate under pressure to support unit initiatives in a collaborative, team-based environment.The job responsibilities include, but are not limited to:Perform a comprehensive range of microbiology testing within the unit on a rotational basisReceive, evaluate and sort submitted specimens according to established protocols; create unique case accessionsProcess specimens for diagnostic testing; inoculate to appropriate mediasOperate, monitor, and troubleshoot lab equipment and instrumentationProvide support to uphold the Quality Assurance systemParticipate in process improvement initiativesAssist with the training and support of technical staffOther duties as requestedRequired QualificationsBachelor's degree in a science related field with up to two years of relevant work experience, or equivalent combination of education and experienceProficient with various basic software applications with the ability to learn new software quickly (Microsoft Office Suite)Ability to perform laboratory procedures and record keeping with accuracy, precision, and efficiencyExcellent analytical and problem-solving skillsExcellent self-management practices to successfully oversee and organize competing priorities to meet deadlinesAbility to handle sensitive, confidential information with tact and discretionAbility to sit or stand for extended periods of time at benches, computers, biological safety cabinets or while using laboratory equipment or instrumentationEmployees working in the laboratory must receive the pre-exposure rabies prophylaxis vaccination series prior to or immediately after hire, which will be paid for by the department.Preferred QualificationsBachelor's degree in Microbiology, Medical Laboratory Science, or a related fieldExperience working in a veterinary diagnostic laboratory or a clinical laboratory settingExperience handling infectious organismsExperience using laboratory information systems (LIMS)Self-motivated with a high level of initiative to continue learningExperience in and/or demonstrated commitment to supporting diversity, equity, access, inclusion, and wellbeingAbility to cultivate and develop inclusive and equitable working relationships with students, faculty, staff, and community members.Important Details about the PositionThis is an onsite position located in Ithaca, NY.This is a full-time three-year term position with potential for extension contingent upon funding and performance.We are unable to provide Visa sponsorship, now or in the future, for this position.Relocation assistance will not be provided for this position.This position is 39 hours per week. While normal business hours are 8:00 am to 5:00 pm, specific schedules may change to meet the needs of the business, requiring employees to work early mornings, evenings, weekends, University holidays and scheduled breaks. Additionally, members of this team are required to work Saturdays on a rotating basis.
