POSITION SUMMARY:

The Veggie Van is a mobile fresh market thar stops in neighborhoods throughout Grand Rapids and Muskegon, bridging the various barriers to fresh produce for people who otherwise have limited access to fresh produce. We prioritize selling locally grown, top-quality fruits and vegetables without any price markups. Additionally, we accept SNAP, DUFB, WIC project, and Senior Project Fresh/Market FRESH benefits and have been working with local medical providers in pilot produce prescription programs.

During the warm months, the Veggie Van also works with Corewell Health to pack and distribute bags of produce to communities throughout West Michigan for free. The Veggie Van driver works on a team to execute the sale and daily operations of the YMCA Veggie Van.

This position requires a part-time 2-3days/week, approximately 4-5 hrs/day commitment. This position may involve some early morning and evening responsibilities. This is a grant funded position.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Drive Veggie Van to daily sitesMaintain and balance a cash drawerPick up produce from local suppliers as neededSet up produce displays efficiently and attractively (requires heavy lifting)Offer exceptional customer service to a diverse group of clientsMaintain cleanliness and organization of produce on the vanEvaluate the quantify and quality of produce inventoryCommunicate in a positive demeanor with host sites to ensure proper implementation of the Veggie VanConduct daily vehicle safety inspectionsPerforms any other functions deemed to be necessary for the smooth and efficient operation of the YMCA of Greater Grand Rapids Association

COMPENSATION

$14.62 - $18.28 ; Part Time; Non Exempt (up to 25 hours/week)

QUALIFICATIONS:

One to three years of experience in the local (West Michigan) food system with gardening/growing, produce retail, food benefit program implementation or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Ability to speak Spanish is strongly desired.

Ability to interact with people from all ethnic backgrounds, ages, and lifestyles. Minimum of two years' experience working with diverse populations preferred. Ability and desire to work with low-income populations. Ability to react quickly to emergency situations. Working knowledge of computers and experience with a variety of software applications. Reliable transportation is required. Must be 18 years of age or older. WIC project fresh, Senior Project Fresh, SNAP, Double Up Food Bucks knowledge preferred.

TRAVEL:

90-100% of local travel within the state of Michigan; occasional out-of-state travel may be required for educational conferences or training.
