General Description:
The Compliance Coordinator assists the Compliance Officer to establish and implement an effective compliance program to prevent improper, unethical or illegal conduct. The compliance coordinator supports all activities of the Compliance department and is guided by the OIG Seven Elements of an Effective Compliance program and OIG/DOJ guidance documents. This individual participates and assists in policy development or revision, communication, hotline monitoring, training and education, investigation and response, risk assessment, and program evaluation. Assists with program monitoring/tracking and annual audit plan data collection/preparation. Assists organizational department leaders with compliance related activities within their departments. Assists with data collection and reporting to external agencies such as NM Rural Health Network or NM Health Care Authority.
Essential Functions:
Assists the Compliance Officer with implementation and monitoring of day-to-day operation of the compliance program. Assists with the development and revision of Compliance policies and procedures for the general operation of the compliance program and its related activities to prevent illegal, unethical or improper conduct. Under the guidance of the Compliance Officer, reviews and updates the organizational Compliance Code of Conduct to ensure continuing currency and relevance in providing guidance to management and employees. Participates in collaborations with other departments (for example, human resources, chief information security officer and health information management director) in identification, investigation, and resolution of compliance issues. May consult with general counsel as directed/needed to resolve difficult legal compliance issues. Under the direction and oversight of the Compliance Officer, may respond to alleged violations of rules, regulations, policies, procedures and standards of conduct by evaluating or recommending the initiation of investigative procedures. With the Compliance Officer, acts as an independent review and evaluation body to ensure that compliance issues and concerns within the organization are being appropriately evaluated, investigated and resolved. Monitors, and as necessary, coordinates compliance activities of other departments to remain abreast of the status of all compliance activities and to identify trends. Monitors OIG Workplan and other Compliance agencies/resources for updates to federal/state law, regulations, or best practice in the compliance realm. Assists with Physician/APP compensation/reimbursement tracking and contract monitoring. Participate in Succession activities towards Compliance Officer role. Education & Training Requirements:
Registered Nurse in the State of New Mexico preferred Master's degree in nursing or health administration; or actively engaged in obtaining either degree preferred Certification in Healthcare Compliance preferred; obtain within 3 years. Minimum of five (5) years clinical healthcare experience is required. Strong skills in Microsoft office products including ability with data presentation. Must be organized and be able to work with multiple diverse departments. Experience in dealing with compliance issues preferred (specific knowledge of fraud and abuse, Medicare/Medicaid reimbursement issues, Stark issues, EMTALA issues, HIPAA issues, and contract law issues preferred).
