Nature of Work

This position specifically helps school children cross streets safely and maintains a safe environment for students walking to and from school. Candidate is responsible for ensuring that school children and motorists follow traffic laws so that children are provided a safe environment to prevent injuries. Must be reliable, self-motivated and understand the importance of the job. Must have the ability to communicate verbally and in writing.Must have reliable transportation.Essential Job Functions•Create gaps in traffic to facilitate the safe crossing of pedestrians.•Ability to control a STOP paddle effectively to provide approaching road users with clear, fully direct view of the paddle's STOP message during the entire crossing movement.•Regular and prompt attendance is essential; mental effort is required daily.•Understand proper crossing procedures and can recognize and properly handle hazardous situations.•Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing, using proper grammar and spelling; ability to follow written and verbal instructions.•Physical agility to maneuver on foot in vehicular traffic and take emergency action in unsafe situations.•Visual depth perception must be adequate to detect sounds and noises denoting unsafe or dangerous situations and warnings.•Must possess eyesight that is correctable to 20/20.•Ability to work with a degree of independence.•Ability to establish an effective working relationship with children, parents, and school employees.•Must possess the skills of reading and writing and speak the English language at an operational level.•Perform related functions as required.

Minimum Requirements

Must have a High School Diploma or GED. Requires valid State of Florida driver license and satisfactory driving record as a condition of initial and continued employment. Must successfully complete standardized training course and show proficiency. Preference will be given to applicants who possess an active crossing guard certification. Applicant selected for hire will be subject to a background investigation and drug-alcohol screen test. Completion of The Florida School Crossing Guard Training program required by "Ramon Turnquest School Crossing Guard Act."

Must have availability to work a shift before school AND a shift after during the public school year (August through May).

Work Days and Hours:

These hours may vary according to demand and workload.

Monday: 9:30 a.m. and 2:45 p.m. - 4:30 p.m.

Tuesday: 9:30 a.m. and 2:45 p.m. - 4:30 p.m.

Wednesday: 7:30 a.m. - 9:00 a.m. and 1:45 p.m. - 3:30 p.m.

Thursday: 9:30 a.m. and 2:45 p.m. - 4:30 p.m.

Friday: 7:30 a.m. - 9:30 a.m. and 2:45 p.m. - 4:30 p.m.

Marginal Job Functions

This position is performed outside and is subject to exposure to the elements: heat, cold, and wet conditions; job involves walking and standing for long periods of time; constant seeing and hearing are required to fulfill job responsibilities; job is subject to exposure to environmental and/or physical hazards.
