The PositionThe City of Torrance welcomes you to help make a difference by becoming a

Crossing Guard ! The City of Torrance is looking for dedicated, community-minded individuals to serve as Crossing Guards to meet the needs of our children at Torrance Unified schools. This position is employed by the

Torrance Police Department

and supervised by the Police Services Supervisor.

Crossing Guards

direct children going to or returning from school in crossing streets at assigned street corners during designated hours; maintain discipline among school children when they are approaching a street intersection or crossing the street; determine safest possible time to cross street; and stops and starts traffic to permit the crossing of school children at a street intersection.

Crossing Guards

also evaluate situations and act properly and quickly in emergencies; report accidents of school children and vehicles failing to obey traffic regulations at school crossings; and communicate clearly and effectively with children.

Hours: This is a recurrent, part-time, non-civil service, as needed position.

Shift hours are 8:00 a.m. to 9:15 a.m. and

2:50 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.

Applicants must be dependable and have the ability to learn on the job. The required education is completion of the eighth grade. Graduation from high school is preferred.

Successful candidates will possess the following :A strong work ethic with a work history of stability, reliability, dependability, and flexibility;Willingness to work a physically demanding job with school aged children;Excellent judgment, decision-making and patience in dealing with pedestrian and vehicular traffic.

BENEFIT SUMMARY FOR CROSSING GUARD EMPLOYEESNote: Not all benefits listed may be applicable to all positions with in the unit. Please refer to the MOU for specifics.

Uniform Allowance

(Sec. 3.1)City pays $100, four times per year (March, June, Oct. and Dec.).New employees receive $125 uniform purchase allowance, at time of entrance to position.In addition, new employees receive a voucher for up to $150 toward uniform purchases.

Authorized Leave

(Sec. 3.2)Employees with 2 years+ continuous service receive 25 hours of paid leave per fiscal year.

Regularly assigned Crossing Guards receive (4 hours) pay on the Thursday and Friday of TUSD spring break week, Thanksgiving, day after Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, New Year's Eve, New Year's Day, Lincoln's birthday and President's Day.

Certificate of $140/year given to employees the first pay period of November.

Bereavement Leave

(Sec. 4.6)

Three (3) working days without pay

Deferred Compensation

(Sec. 4.9)Employees participating in the City's mandated plan under Plan B, and who reach a total of $5,000 in the plan, will have more investment options available
