Required QualificationsApplicants must specifically address how they meet these required qualifications to meet the requirements of the position.

Demonstrated experience working in local, state, or federal compliance, law enforcement, fire service, emergency medical service, or emergency management.

Demonstrated experience with the development and/or review of emergency operation plans, other audit or plan reviews, or complex case management or reporting.

Demonstrated experience developing training content, resources, and presenting to adult audiences.

Demonstrated ability to plan and manage workflow on complex projects.

Demonstrated ability to exercise sound judgment in the interest of regulatory compliance and public safety.

Strong written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills with demonstrated ability to effectively communicate to and with a wide range of stakeholders.

Demonstrated experience working in an educational setting or with government agencies.

Demonstrated experience in meeting multiple tight project timelines.

Skilled in Microsoft Suite, including Word, Excel, and Outlook.

Preferred Qualifications

Demonstrated experience working in local, state, or federal compliance, law enforcement, fire service, emergency medical service, or emergency management for a minimum of 5 years.

Completion of IS 100, IS 200, IS 700, IS 800, IS 360, and IS 362.

Demonstrated experience working in public safety or emergency management in a school setting.

Demonstrated experience with the development and/or review of emergency operation plans in a school setting.

Experience working in a K-12 emergency management position.

One or more of the following: IAEM Certified Emergency Manager (CEM), IAEM Associate Emergency Manager (AEM), ASIS Certified Protection Professional (CPP), ASIS Physical Security Professional (PSP), or PMI Project Management Professional (PMP) credential.

Bachelor’s Degree in a related field.

Job DescriptionThe Texas School Safety Center (TxSSC) is an official university-level research center at Texas State University. The TxSSC is tasked in Chapter 37 of the Texas Education Code and the Governor’s Homeland Security Strategic Plan with key school safety initiatives and mandates. The TxSSC serves as the clearinghouse for the dissemination of safety and security information through research, training, and technical assistance for K-12 schools and junior colleges throughout the state of Texas.

The TxSSC welcomes applicants for the position of School Safety Readiness Specialist who have extensive experience within an organization that serves at the local, state, or federal level. This position will be responsible for assisting in the statewide review, verification, and follow-up of multi-hazard emergency operations plans and safety and security audits for all K-12 districts, charter school districts, and community colleges in Texas to ensure compliance with state school safety legislation. This position will also assist with ongoing research and development of best practices related to school emergency operation plans, specifically the development of EOP online training, toolkits, and resources for Texas school districts.

This position will work with a team of specialists under the leadership of the Associate Director of School Safety Readiness, as well as work collaboratively with the Training and Education division to develop training and resources that will assist school districts with successfully meeting school safety compliance measures.
