The ship’s captain will have full authority aboard the ship and be responsible for the safety of the vessel, its crew, and its passengers. The captain will coordinate with vessel customers regarding cruise particulars, develop voyage plans, work in conjunction with department director and technicians to execute science objectives at sea, and will be responsible for the safe deployment and recovery of scientific equipment from the vessel.The captain will be responsible for preparing and overseeing the ship’s inspections by USCG, ABS, and NSF authorities; will ensure compliance with all federal, state, local, and University policies and regulations including USCG, EPA, ABS, and NOAA; will ensure all ship’s official documents, licenses, and permits are current; will conduct proper safety drills in compliance with USCG, UNOLS, and University requirements; and will maintain all ship logs in accordance with USCG, UNOLS, and University standards.The captain will supervise and manage the crew and vessel operations; will be the primary navigator and helmsman and will stand navigational watches; is responsible for the vessel’s maintenance and operations; will ensure vessel’s standards of safety, operations, professionalism, and cleanliness; will be responsible for all medical and lifesaving equipment; and will maintain a high level of customer service to clients and science party guests.A high school diploma and 5 years of experience as a captain of a vessel of 100 GRT (325 GT ITC) or greater is required.The following Certifications, experience, and training are required:USCG license 500-ton Master Near Coastal or greater preferredRadar Certificate with ARPA EndorsementSTCW (Standards of Training, Certification, and Watchstanding)Advanced Firefighting CertificateBridge Resource Management (BRM) CertificateMPIC Certificate (Medical Person in Charge)Five (5) years of experience as captain of a vessel of 100 GRT (325 GT ITC) or greaterJob Status:
