Human Resources Director & Safety Lead

to join our team, providing critical HR support and fostering a positive workplace culture.

Scope and Responsibilities:

Based in Aurora, IL and reporting to the Executive Director of Administration, the successful candidate will be an important member of the leadership team and have primary day-to-day responsibility for the company’s human resource plans in ways that support the Company mission and overall strategy while transforming the business and preparing for the next chapter of the growing organization. In this role you will lead recruitment, safety, employee relations, compensation & benefits, compliance (labor laws) and training & development.

A true business partner, the HR Director will drive hiring/recruitment, people development, practices, processes, and policy. The successful candidate will have an opportunity to make a significant organizational impact, including contribution to strategy, organizational development, employee relations, engagement, and satisfaction. This person will drive the bench plan, develop and retain hi-potential talent, and partner with senior leadership team to build a world class HR organization. This is a hands-on head of HR role, department of one, with growth plans for the company in place to expand with the correct strategy in place.

This position serves as a trusted resource for employees and leadership, ensuring HR policies and programs are effectively implemented. The ideal candidate will be fluent in both English and Spanish, possess strong HR generalist skills, and be comfortable working in a manufacturing environment.

Key Selection Criteria:

5-10 years of increasingly responsible human resources experience in a leadership role, ideally in an emerging, high-growth environment. Manufacturing experience required. Must have experience working with an hourly/non-exempt employee population. Family-owned company experience is a distinct advantage.

Skilled at advancing corporate culture and successfully leading change management initiatives, including the implementation of change management processes, related training, and internal communications.

Organized, resourceful self-starter with strong ability to pivot quickly and effectively manage tasks and projects with a high level of detail while within tight deadlines.

Outstanding communication skills including verbal, written and presentation skills. This leader must be able to effectively communicate with owners, senior leaders, and employees at all levels.

Highly effective at building and nurturing trust-based relationships to maximize teamwork and collaboration while objectively listening, coaching, and guiding, balancing policy with compassion and accountability.

Key Responsibilities:

Payroll Administration:

Process bi-weekly payroll accurately and timely, including timecard management, overtime calculations, and payroll adjustments.

Ensure compliance with payroll regulations and company policies.

Address and resolve payroll-related inquiries from employees.

Develop and implement compensation strategy.

Benefits Administration:

Coordinate benefits enrollment, changes, and terminations for employees.

Assist with employee questions and concerns related to benefits such as health insurance, retirement plans, and other programs.

Manage annual open enrollment and collaborate with the benefits provider on claims and issues.

Employee Relations:

Serve as a point of contact for employee concerns, providing guidance on policies, procedures, and conflict resolution.

Marketing of programs stemming from HR Department (e.g. open enrollment, annual 401K meetings, employee achievement awards, referral program, etc.)

Conduct investigations on employee complaints, escalating as necessary, and work to resolve issues in a fair and consistent manner.

Foster positive employee relations by promoting a culture of trust and collaboration.

Safety & Compliance:

Support safety initiatives and ensure OSHA and company safety standards are met.

Loss Prevention

Accident Investigation – including near miss and documentation for accidents.

Risk Control

Serve as the Workmen’s Compensation external and internal contact.

Assist in training programs on safety procedures and protocols.

Partner with the Safety team to conduct workplace safety audits and address any hazards.

Serves as a subject matter expert regarding compliance with laws governing Human Resources (Department of Labor, Unemployment, etc).

Responsible for establishing Procedures & Processes Binder for HR Department.

Responsible for the review and editing of all Corporate Policies & Procedures in regard to employment and human resources (e.g. Employee Handbook Review).

Employee Handbook review must be completed every 2 years & reissued.

Safety Handbook reviewed and edits made every year, if necessary, re-distribution every 2 years.

Talent Acquisition (Recruitment):

Develop Talent Acquisition best practices and processes that effectively and efficiently attract top talent in a manufacturing environment.

Serves as a Talent Acquisition Subject Matter Expert (SME) and stays informed of current industry trends to make informed strategic recommendations.

Refine and communicate the full recruiting cycle process while meeting goals for organizational growth, including setting expectations for recruiting by clearly providing a defined process and establishing service levels.

Training:

Train and onboard all new hires.

Lead all aspects of the training lifecycle, including needs assessments and training program design and development.

General HR Support:

Maintain accurate employee records and HR databases.

Participate in HR projects and support continuous improvement initiatives in HR practices.

Qualifications:

Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources, Business Administration, or a related field preferred.

Bilingual (Spanish speaking) preferred.

Strong knowledge of HR functions including payroll, benefits, employee relations, and safety regulations.

Familiarity and understanding of federal, state and local laws and the ability to advise on laws and regulations affecting HR practice.

Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with a commitment to confidentiality and professionalism.

Familiarity with HR software and payroll systems preferred.

SHRM – CP or SHRM – SCP Certification.
