Work involves assisting with the planning, implementation and evaluation of recreational programs and daily activities of the center. The Recreation Specialist evaluates recreational programs and daily activities of the center and interacts with children, adults and seniors. In assisting with the overall management, activities and programs associated with the daily operation of the recreation centers, the Recreation Specialist participates in activities, provides informational materials, directs volunteers and employees, and contributes to the cultural growth of individuals. Department Hiring Salary: $41,187 Essential Functions The essential functions include, but are not limited to: Assists in planning, implementing, and evaluating recreational programs and daily activities of the center. Serves on committees for the planning and marketing of events. Assists in managing facility operations and aids employees. Interacts with children, teens, adults, and seniors. Participates in activities in addition to providing informational materials, directing volunteers and part-time employees as well as contributes to the cultural growth of individuals. Assists with the management of daily operations of the facility by scheduling and monitoring volunteers and part-time employees, compiling figures and preparing reports, providing lesson plans and program planning, authorizing permits, and collecting fees for programs and rental of the facility. Interacts with citizens by responding to inquiries, and contributing to the growth and development of youth, teens, adults, seniors, and volunteers. Markets the recreation program by distributing flyers and announcements to the community and submitting press releases. Serves on committees for the planning and marketing of events. Performs related duties by carrying out administrative responsibilities, transporting patrons, submits and writes initiatives and provides input on purchases Education/Experience Work requires knowledge of a specific vocational, administrative, or technical nature which may be obtained with six months/one year of advanced study or training past the high school level. Appropriate certification may be awarded upon satisfactory completion of advanced study or training. The preferred candidate will possess: Associate degree in Recreation and Tourism, Physical Education, or closely related field preferred. One (1) year experience in the field of recreation and leisure activity or closely related field. One (1) year experience working with youth, teens, adults, or seniors. Current CPR/First Aid Certification (required within 6 months of hire) Proficiency in the use of Microsoft Office Suite. Ability to see, hear, stand/walk for extended periods of time, lift from ground to above shoulder, climb, bend, stoop, sit, push, pull, perform tasks that require manual dexterity and utilize telephone communications. Excellent inter-personal, communication, organization, and problem-solving skills. Additional Information & Requirements Signing Bonus: This position is eligible for a one-time $5,000 signing bonus for applications received on or after February 22, 2022. The signing bonus will be paid in two (2) increments: $2,500 upon completion of 60 days of employment, and $2,500 upon completion of your probationary period. To receive the signing bonus, you must be an active employee in good standing. Work Hours: Monday to Sunday; 6:00 a.m. - 12:00 a.m.; not to exceed 40 hours per week; flexible hours will apply including weekends, holidays, and special events. A valid Driver's License is required. CPR/First Aid Certification is required within six months of employment. If you are hired January 1, 2022, or after to a position with Virginia Retirement System (VRS) benefits, you will be required to contribute five percent (5%) of your salary toward your retirement benefit. This will be a pre-tax payroll deduction. The Tuition Assistance Program is established to encourage employees toward continued self-development and education.
