OVERVIEW
This position is located organizationally in General Accounting and Reporting (GAR), Office of Finance and Accounting (OF&A), Under Secretary for Finance and Administration, Smithsonian Institution (SI). SI is a diverse museum and research complex dedicated to the increase and diffusion of knowledge. OF&A is responsible for the management and integrity of SI’s financial assets, operations, reporting, records, policies and procedures, and central accounting and financial services. The GAR team is primarily responsible for accounting activities among SI central offices. This senior accounting position: advises at an expert level on accounting matters, analyzes and resolves complex problems, prepares comprehensive accounting data, develops and inspects accounting systems, executes audit processes, trains individuals, and represents GAR in any situation.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Financial Reporting Prepares financial statements monthly ensuring they cross-tie with the footnotes and conducts period-to-period comparisons identifying differences. Prepares assigned footnotes for annual reporting. Prepares and validates financial reports for net asset reports, various U.S. federal reports, contributions, and inter-unit transactions. Generates reports from the subledger to validate balances reflected in the general ledger. Conducts monthly and year-end closing processes. Account Reconciliation Prepares assigned schedules for audit cycles, reviews for consistency with prior years. Prepares, analyzes, interprets and presents accounting data. Prepares fund balance reconciliations that agree with U.S. Treasury. Management Advisory Services Serves as expert authority in accounting standards. Advises management on complex financial methods and procedures. Participates in meetings to increase awareness of Unit operations. Policies and Procedures Prepares and updates accounting policies and procedures. Reviews and interprets documents for conformity to GAAP. Participates in the ongoing review of systems to identify improvements.
QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS
Mastery of professional knowledge of accounting theories and practices. Knowledge of GAAP and U.S. federal financial regulations. Ability to communicate verbally and in writing. Specialized knowledge of construction accounting methods. Education completed outside the United States must be deemed equivalent to U.S. higher education programs.
